MEN'S COLLEGE SWIMMING: WAVERLY GRAD ATANASOFF BIG PART OF RECORD-SETTING DAY AT RIT (2021-12-08)

ROCHESTER "” Mike Atanasoff, a sophomore on the RIT men's swimming team, swam on four first-place relays, including a pair of record-setters, here Saturday as the Tigers won the 2021 Don Richards Invitational.

Atanasoff swam on the record-setting 200-yard medley relay, where he swam the final 50-yard freestyle leg in 21.07 seconds. The RIT foursome's winning time of 1:32.44 (previous record 1:33.05, set in 2019) - nearly eight seconds fast than runners-up from Skidmore College.

He also swam on the record-setting 400-yard medley relay, swimming the final 100 free leg in 46.37 seconds. The RIT foursome's winning time was 3:24.97 (previous record 3:07.85, set in 2019) - nearly 16 1/2-seconds faster than runner-up foursome from Clarkson University.

Atanasoff also swam the opening leg of the first-place 200-yard freestyle relay in 21.6 seconds. He swam the the third leg of the winning 400-yard free relay in 46.59 seconds

Individually, Atanasoff finished second in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 21.46 seconds, and he was fourth in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 52.57 seconds.

RIT returns to action at the New Year's Invite in Fort Pierce, Fla. on Jan. 3.
