SPENCER — Waverly raced out to a big lead early, and cruised to a 74-18 win over Spencer-VanEtten here Saturday afternoon in IAC South junior varsity boys basketball action.

Carter George pumped in 11 points, including a 3-pointer, and Jake VanHouten added four points in Waverly’s game-opening 17-4 run.

Jon Searles scored eight points in the second quarter, and Bryce LaForest knocked down a pair of 3-pointers as Waverly used a 17-5 run to extend its lead to 34-9 at the half.

Six different junior Wolverines put their name in the scoring column in the third quarter, with VanHouten scoring seven points, and Ben Shaw and George each connecting on a pair of 3-pointres for six points, and Jake Benjamin also scoring six points to fuel a 30-2 blitz that pushed the lead to 64-11 entering the final eight minutes.

George led Waverly with 17 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, four steals, and three assists, while LaForest had 15 points, including three 3-pointers, five steals, and three assists, and VanHouten had 11 points, six rebounds, and seven steals.

Shaw scored nine points in the win, while Searles had eight points and four boards, Benjamin had eight points and seven rebounds, Alex Burgess grabbed four rebounds, and Nick Mattison chipped in with three steals.

Waverly travels to Newark Valley Tuesday.
