Valley Sports Report
NEWARK VALLEY — Waverly jumped out to a big lead early — thanks in part to a pair of Aubrey Ennis home runs, then held on for dear life in a 9-8 win over Newark Valley here Wednesday afternoon in IAC South Large School Division softball action.

The Lady Wolverines, now 1-1, led 5-1 after 2 /12 innings, and 9-2 after 4 1/2 innings.

Ennis belted a two-run home run in the top of the first to give Waverly a quick 2-0 lead, but Newark Valley answered with a run on an errant throw in the home half off the first to close the gap to 2-1.

Senior Lourden Benjamin led off the second with a double to right field, and scored on a two-out RBI single by senior Michaela Lauper to make it 3-1.

Ennis smacked her second home run of the game with one out in the top of the third inning, and sophomore Lea VanAllen added an RBI single to extend the lead to 5-1.

Newark Valley scored a quick run in the home half of he inning, and had runners on first and second with no outs, but Waverly starer Olivia Robinson struck out the next two batters, and a runner was thrown out on the base paths to end the threat.

Senior Bella Romano knocked home a run in the top of the fourth inning with a groundout, and Robinson helped her own cause with a line-drive, two-out, two-RBI double to make it 8-2.

Lauper knocked in what would be a much-needed insurance run in the top of the fifth inning with an RBI single to make it 9-2.

Newark Valley answered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning in a rally capped by a two-run triple by Joslyn Wright to close the gap to 9-6.

The Lady Cardinals cut the lead to 9-8 in the sixth inning on a two-run, two-out double by freshman Leah Austin Whittaker.

Robinson stranded Whittaker on second, then retired the side in order in the seventh inning.

Ennis homered twice and doubled, scored three runs, and had three RBI to lead Waverly at the plate, while Lauper stroked three singles, scored one run, and drove in two runs, and Robinson doubled and singled, scored one run, and knocked in two runs.

VanAllen singled and drove in one run in the win, while junior Alyvia Daddona singled and scored one run, Benjamin doubled, Cooney singled, and junior Peyton Shaw scored one run.
