ELMIRA HEIGHTS — Down 12-2 in the fifth inning the Waverly Wolverines were three outs away from being mercy ruled.

The Wolverines had other ideas, scoring eight runs in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth to come all the way back and top Edison 14-13.

"Edison did a great job hitting the gaps and being aggressive," Waverly coach Kayla Witman said. "It was an intense game and both teams fought hard the whole game.

"I'm so proud that my team never gave up, never got down on themselves, and fought to win that game till the very last out."

Waverly led 1-0 in the top of the first inning, before Edison scored seven in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead.

The Wolverines got a run back in the second and it was 7-2 into the bottom of the fourth inning when the Spartans scored five times.

With Waverly up 14-13 the Spartans got a run back in the bottom of the seventh, but Waverly ended the threat with Edison leaving a runner at third base.

In the seventh with one out Maddison Pack walked and after an out was recorded Bella Moffe singled and took second on the throw, putting runners on second and third with two outs.

Brianna Korsky followed with a single, scoring Pack and putting Moffe on third, but Waverly got the out on a ground ball stranding runners at the corners.

In the fifth inning Peyton Shaw led off with a line drive, reaching on an error. Bella Romano followed with a bunt and reached on an error, scoring Shaw.

Aubrey Ennis delivered a line drive single to center that moved Romano to third and Romano scored on a wild pitch, before Olivia Robinson walked.

After an out was recorded, Lea VanAllen singled, moving Ennis to third and Robinson to second to load the bases.

Micheala Lauper walked with the bases loaded, scoring Ennis. VanAllen scored on a wile pitch, and after a runner was caught trying to seal, Natalie Lauper walked.

Shaw singled to center scoring Micheala Lauper and Romano singled, and Ennis singled, scoring Shaw.

The eight run inning cut the deficit to 12-10, and in the sixth inning the Wolverines took the lead.

Brian Cooney walked and VanAllen reached on an error after hitting a hard ground ball. Micheala Lauper singled home Cooney and VanAllen to tie the game.

After an out was recorded Natalie Lauper singled. Micheala Lauper scored on a passed ball to and Natalie Lauper scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Shaw.

Micheala Lauper and Ennis each had two hits. Lauper had a double, an RBI and three runs scored and Ennis had two RBI and a run scored in the game.

Shaw had a hit, three RBI and two runs scored and Natalie Lauper, VanAllen and Romano all had hits for the Wolverines.

Romano scored a run, VanAllen scored two runs and Natalie Lauper had three RBI and two runs scored.

Cooney, Robinson and Daddona all scored runs in the game.

Every Waverly starter either had a hit, or scored a run, in the game.

Robinson struck out three in four innings for Waverly and Micheala Lauper struck out four in three innings.

Mariana Jones, Kailey Ripley and Korsky each had three hits in the game. Jones had four RBI, two doubles and two runs scored and Korsky had an RBI and two runs scored. Ripley had an RBI and a run scored.

Emma Maggs, Moffe and Emily Aiello all had a pair of hits for the Spartans in the game.

Maggs had a double, an RBI and two runs scored and Moffe had an RBI and two runs scored, while Aiello had a double, an RBI and a run scored.

Maliyah McIver had a hit, an RBI and a run scored and Madasyn Huffner had a hit and an RBI, while Maycie Bennett had a hit and scored a run.

Pack scored a run for the Spartans in the game as every starter for for Edison had a hit in the game.

Jones struck out five in 4 2/3 innings for Edison and Ripley struck out two in 2 1/3 innings.
