IAC SOFTBALL: WAVERLY RIDES BIG FIRST INNING TO 19-1 ROUT OF WATKINS GLEN (24 PHOTOS) (2022-04-19)

WATKINS GLEN — Waverly erupted for 11 runs in the first inning, and cruised to a 19-1 six-inning win over Watkins Glen in IAC South Large School softball action here on a cold and windy Monday afternoon that also featured a little sleet and snow showers.

Senior Bella Romano opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with an RBI single to make it 1-0, then capped the 11-run outburst with a two-out, three-run triple to make it 10-0. She scored moments later on a passed ball.

Also in the inning, junior Michaela Lauper stroked two singles, scored two runs, and drove in one run, senior Aubrey Ennis rapped an RBI double, and Kailey Purvis added an RBI single.

Watkins Glen scored a run in the home half of the second inning, but Waverly answered with four runs in the top of the third to make it 15-1.

The rally featured an RBI triple by Romano,, RBI singles by Alyvia Daddona and Ennis, and an RBI groundout off the bat of Lea VanAllen.

The Lady Wolverines added four more runs in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI double by VanAllen, and RBI singles by Daddona and Lauper.

Sophomore Olivia Robinson was the beneficiary of the Waverly offensive barrage. She earned the win in the pitcher’s circle, allowing one run on six hits, with six strikeouts and one walk in six innings.

Romano had three hits, including a pair of triples, three runs scored, and four RBI, and Lauper singled three times, scored four runs, and drove in two runs to pace Waverly’s 14-hit attack, while Daddona singled twice, scored three runs, and had three RBI.

VanAllen and Ennis each doubled and singled, scored one run, and drove in two runs in the win, while freshman Brinn Cooney singled, scored three runs, and drove in one run, Purvis singled, scored one run, and knocked in two runs, and Natalie Lauper, sophomore Peyton Shaw, and senior Lourden Benjamin each scored one run.

Waverly, now 3-1, hosts Newark Valley Wednesday.
