IAC SOFTBALL: EDISON HOLDS OFF WAVERLY, 7-4 (2022-04-25)

WAVERLY — Edison scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning, then made it stand up in a 7-4 win over Waverly here Monday afternoon in IAC South Large School Division baseball action.

After three scoreless inning, Kailey Ripley and Emma Maggs stroked back-to-back RBI singles to give the Lady Spartans a 2-0 lead. They added two more runs on an error, then finished off the rally by scoring a run on a wild pitch.

Waverly got one of those runs back in the home half of the fourth, then scored three runs on two walks and two errors in the fifth inning to close the gap to 5-4.

Edison added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 7-4 lead.

Mariana Jones closed out the game in the pitcher’s circle for Edison, retiring Waverly in order in the sixth inning, and pitching around a lead-off walk in the seventh.

Sophomore Olivia Robinson singled twice and drove in one run, and freshman Brinn Cooney doubled and singled to pace Waverly’s six-hit attack, while senior Bella Romano single d and scored two runs, and junior Michaela Lauper singled and scored one run.

Senior Aubrey Ennis had two RBI for the Lady Wolverines, and sophomore Peyton Shaw scored one run.

Lauper was tagged with the loss, allowing seven runs — five earned — on 109 hots, while striking out seven and walking five in seven innings of work.

Gabby Milazzo earned the win for the Lady Spartans, allowing one run on three hits, while striking out five and walking none in four innings.

Jones registered the save, allowing three runs — one earned — on one hit, while striking out three and walking three.

Maliyah McIver, Emily Aiello, and Madasyn Huffner each had two hits to pace Edison at the plate.

Waverly, now 4-2, hosts Watkins Glen Wednesday.
