IAC SOFTBALL: WAVERLY RIDES FIRST-INNING RALLY TO 19-1 WIN OVER WATKINS GLEN (24 PHOTOS) (2022-04-27)
Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY — Waverly erupted for 12 runs in the bottom of the first inning, and cruised to a 19-1 five-inning win over Watkins Glen in IAC South Large School Division softball action on a cold Wednesday afternoon.
Sophomore Olivia Robinson was the beneficiary of the offensive onslaught, earning the win in the pitcher’s circle. She allowed one unearned run on three hits, while striking out seven and walking two in five innings.
Senior Bella Romano knocked in the first run of the game with an RBI single. Sophomores Natalie Lauper and Faith Blauvelt added RBI singles to make it 7-0, and sophomore Peyton Shaw belted a two-run double to run the lead to 9-0.
Sophomore Lea VanAllen and Robinson added RBI singles to extend the lead to 11-0, and junior Alyvia Daddona’s RBI groundout capped the rally.
Waverly added one run in the second inning, and six more in the fourth.
Shaw had three hits, including a double, three runs scored, and three RBI, while Romano had three hits, three runs scored, and one RBI, and Robinson stroked three singles, scored two runs, and drove in two runs to pace Waverly’s 19-hit attack.
VanAllen singled twice, scored two runs, and knocked in two runs in the win, while Natalie Lauper singled twice, scored one run, and drove in two runs, senior Aubrey Ennis doubled twice and scored two runs, and freshman Brinn Cooney tripled and singled, and scored three runs.
Daddona singled, scored one run, and drove in two runs for the Lady Wolverines, while Blauvelt singled, scored one run, and knocked in one run, and sophomore Kailey Purvis crosses the plate once.
Waverly also beat Watkins Glen, 19-1, at Watkins Glen last week.
Waverly, now 5-2, returns to action Thursday at unbeaten S-VE.
