DISTRICT 4 TRACK & FIELD: SAYRE'S HUGHEY MEDALS IN 400; RUNS PRs IN BOTH EVENTS (2 PHOTOS) (2022-05-21)

Valley Sports Report
WILLIAMSPORT — Senior Mason Hughey — Sayre’s only competition at this weekend’s District 4, Class AA Track & Field Championships — capped his career in style, running personal-best times in both of his events.

Hughey placed fourth in the 400-meter dash in 52.23 seconds.

“His 400 run was the best run he has put together this season,” said Sayre coach Greg Hughey. “This past week in practice, we worked on race strategy and how important his block start could be. His block start for the 400 was awesome.

“He looked strong today and to place fourth was a great way to end the season, especially not running in the fastest heat,” added Greg Hughey. “He’s been working on the 400 since we started indoor in December so his hard work paid off.”

Hughey finished ninth in the 200-meter dash in 23.74 seconds.

“His block start was OK in the 200, and he still ran a PR,” said Greg Hughey. “He missed a medal in the 200 by .08 second.

“Overall, it was a great day,” added Greg Hughey. “It was a great way to cap off his high school career … we are all proud of his efforts this season.”
