COLLEGE SOFTBALL: ATHENS GRAD BENNETT FINSHES SEASON STRONG AT ALFRED U. (2022-05-22)

Valley Sports Report
ALFRED, N.Y. — The season didn’t end the way the Alfred University softball team would have liked, but Athens grad Megan Bennett, a sophomore, added several lines to an already-impressive resume.

Bennett was named the Empire 8 “Pitcher of Week,” as well as the NCAA Division III “Pitcher of the Week” after her performance in the Empire 8 Tournament, where she earned MVP honors.

Bennett pitched a complete-game shutout in a 9-0 win over St. John Fisher in the Empire 8 championship game.

In all, Bennett was 2-0 with one save in the Empire 8 tourney. She pitched 10 shutout innings, allowing five hits, while striking out 14 and walking three.

She was also named an All-Empire 8 Conference third team all-star.

At the NCAA Regionals, the Lady Saxons went 1-2.

Bennett allowed one run on two hits, while striking out four and walking four in 3 1/3 innings in a 3-1 loss to Kean University in the opening game of the NCAA Regionals.

She pitched a hitless inning of relief in the Lady Saxons 6-1 win over Waynesburg in the opening game of the consolation bracket.

The Lady Saxons then saw their season end with a 10-0 loss to Eastern Conn. State, ranked third in the nation. ECSU went on to beat Kean twice to win the Regional title.

Bennett ended the season with a 7-5 record and eight saves, which led the nation — regardless of division. She posted a 2.36 ERA with 107 strikeouts in 87 1/3 innings.

Alfred University ended its season with a 26-16 record.
