WAVERLY — Griffin Walter and Jack Pipher shut down Hornell’s bats, combining for a 1-hitter, to lead Waverly to a 6-1 win here Saturday in the opening game of pool play in the District 6 Little League Majors Division baseball playoffs.

Walter fanned eight and walked two, while allowing one hit in 3 2/3 innings to earn the win.

Pipher walked two and hit a batter, while striking out two and allowing an unearned run in 2 1/3 innings of hitless relief to earn the save.

Waverly broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning.

Hayden Roskow reached base on an error to lead off the inning, then Gabe Hendershot stoked a single to right field.

After Roskow advanced to third base on a passed ball, and Hendershot stole second, then Brayden Bowman plated the first run with an RBI single. Jon Montgomery capped the rally with a two-run double, but was throw out trying to stretch it into a triple.

In the fourth inning, Roskow scooted home on a passed ball to make it 4-0.

In the fifth inning, Pipher led off the with a walk and scored on an RBI double by Walter to extend the lead to 5-0. Peyton Lawson scored later in the inning to complete the scoring.

Walter doubled and singled, and drove in one run, and Montgomery doubled and drove in two runs to pace Waverly at the plate, while Bowman and Hendershot each singled and scored one run.

Chase Sinsabaugh and Jesse Lantz each aded a single in the win, while Roskow scored two runs, and Pipher and Lawson each scored one run.

Waverly hosts Corning-Painted Post Monday night.
