SAYRE — Sayre scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning, then fended off a late rally in a 9-2 win over Athens here Monday evening in Bradford-Tioga counties American Legion baseball action at Riverfront Stadium.

Jackson Hubbard’s one out double triggered Sayre’s first-inning rally, and after Lucas Horton walked, and Kannon VanDuzer was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Zach Garrity ripped a two-run double to make it 2-0.

With two outs, Joey VanAllen stroked an RBI single up the middle to extend the lead to 3-0, and Will Crossett capped the rally with an RBI single.

Crossett started for Sayre and shut down Athens for three innings, but they took advantage of three base on balls and a two-out error to close the gap to 4-2 after 4 1/2 innings.

In the bottom of the fifth, Hubbard drew a lead-off walk, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball, and scored on an RBI single by Horton to make it 5-2.

Moments later, VanDuzer launched an 0-2 pitch over the right-field fence to push the lead to 7-2.

In his second inning of relief for Sayre, Thomas Morley allowed a lead-off single in the top of the sixth inning to Brady Darrow, then fanned the next three batters.

VanDuzer stroked an RBI single in the home half of the sixth, and Sayre added two more insurance runs on errors.

Crossett earned the win for Sayre, allowing one hit, while striking out three and walking one in three shutout innings.

Horton fanned three and walked one in a scoreless inning of relief, then Morley allowed a pair of unearned runs on one hit in two scoreless innings, while striking out five and walking three.

Brendan Cook finished the game, allowing one hit in a scoreless inning of relief.

VanDuzer homered and singled, scored two runs, and drove in three runs for Sayre, while Hubbard doubled and singled, and scored three runs, and Garrity, doubled, scored one run, and had three RBI.

Horton singled, scored three runs, and drove in one run in the win, and VanAllen and Crossett each singled and knocked in one run.

Carson Smith singled twice to pace Athens’ four-hit attack, while Troy Rosenbloom singled and scored one run, Darrow singled, and Lucas Kraft scored one run.

Sayre, now 5-0, travels to Sullivan County Thursday, while Athens (2-3) hosts Sullivan County Wednesday.
