TIOGA’S DUNCANSON, SILVESTRI BOTH GO 2-2 AT JUNIOR NATIONALS

FARGO, N.D. — Junior Caden Bellis became Tioga’s first-ever All-American here Sunday at the 2022 U.S. Marine Corps 16U Freestyle Nationals, and he did it the hard way.

Bellis lost his opening match Saturday, then reeled off eight wins in a row to guarantee himself a top-eight finish, and All-America honors. He dropped his final bout Sunday night, and will wrestle for seventh place Monday.

Bellis opened the tournament Saturday with a 12-8 loss to Kane Naaktgeboren of Iowa in the round-of-128. Bellis led 8-2 early in the second period, but the Iowa wrestler reeled off 10 points in the final 45 seconds, including the winning points at the buzzer.

Bellis bounced back with a 12-0 technical fall of Colorado’s Abraham Pomeroy in 2:09 in the round-of-64, and then ripped Londen Murphy of Ohio, 6-2, in the second consolation round-of-64.

In his two consolation round-of-32 matches, Bellis scored technical falls.

He beat Robert Owens of Virginia, 10-0, in 35 seconds, then blanked Anthony Vargas of California in 1:29.

In the first round-of-16, Bellis built a 6-0 lead in the first period en route to an 8-2 decision over Owen Seffrood of Wisconsin

In the second round-of-16, Bellis scored with 13 seconds remaining to pull out a 5-4 win over Tucker Strangle of Iowa.

In the round-of-8, Bellis built a 4-0 lead midway through the second period, and held on for a 4-3 win over Missouri’s Gavin Linsman

Bellis built a 4-0 lead early in the second period on his way to a 6-2 win over Minnesota’s Conlan Carlson in the “blood round” to guarantee himself of a top-eight finish and All-America honors.

Bellis finished off his day, dropping a 5-4 decision to Logan W. Paradice of Georgia in the consolation round-of-4.

Bellis scored first and led 2-0, but Paradice scored late in the first period to tie it a 2-2.

Paradice led 5-2 when Bellis scored to trim the deficit to 5-4 with 28 seconds remaining in the match, but Paradice was able to hold on for the win.

Bellis will wrestle Minnesota’s Alex Braun Monday in the seventh-place match.

DUNCANSON GOES 2-2 IN 152-POUND BRACKET AT JUNIOR NATIONALS
Tioga junior Ousmane Duncanson won his first two matches Sunday — both high-scoring affairs, but ended his day at 2-2 in the 152-pound bracket of the U.S. Marine Corps Junior Nationals.

Duncanson opened his day morning with a wild come-from-behind win over Ian McGehee of Tennessee.

McGehee built an 8-1 lead midway through the first period, and led 10-3 after the first three minutes.

Duncanson stormed back in the second period, reeling off 17 points, including three four-point moves to win a 20-10 technical fall in 5:49.

Duncanson followed that up with a 17-12 win over Maclain Morency of Ohio in the round-of-64. He built a 7-1 lead after the first three minutes.

Mordancy stormed back in the second period with nine unanswered points to take a 10-7 lead with 1:22 remaining in the match. However, Duncanson answered with 10 straight points, including a pair of four-point moves, to take a 17-10 lead, before Morency scored at the buzzer to provide the final margin.

Duncanson was knocked into the consolation bracket via a 17-6 technical fall in 2:09 at the hands of Zane Licht of Wisconsin in the round-of-32.

Duncanson tournament came to an end with an 18-9 loss to Keagan Judd on Virginia in the second consolation round-of-32.

SILVESTRI GOES 2-2 IN 126-POUND BRACKET AT JUNIOR NATIONALS
Two-time New York State champ, Tioga junior Gianni Silvestri went 2-2 Sunday in the 126-pound bracket of the U.S. Marine Corps Junior Nationals.

Silvestri dropped his first via 10-0 technical fall to South Dakota’s Owen Hansen in the round-of-128, but bounced back with a pair of wins.

In the first consolation round-of-64, Silvers dispatched of Ohio’s Bryce Skinner with a 10-0 technical fall in 2:36.

He followed that up with a 15-12 decision over Wyoming’s Darron Provost in the second consolation round-of-64.

Silvestri built a 10-2 lead early in the second period, but gave up a pair of four-point moves that allowed Provost to pull within a point, at 13-12 with 31 seconds remaining. Silvestri scored with 23 seconds left to provide the final margin.

Silvestri run ended in the consolation round-of-32 with a 12-2 technical fall in 2:18 to Jackson Young of New Jersey.
