IAC BOYS SOCCER: WAVERLY'S SCHILLMOELLER, LARRABEE, KNIGHT FIRST-TEAM DIVISONAL ALL-STARS; SIX OTHER WOLVERINES LAND ON SECOND TEAM (2022-11-17)

Valley Sports Report
WAVERLY — Waverly, coming off its second straight postseason appearance, had three players — juniors Griff Schillmoeller, Charlie Larrabee, and Sam Knight — named to the IAC South Large School Division first-team all-star team, and six more to the second team in recent voting by the league’s coaches.

Senior Sheldon Huddleston, juniors Nehemiah Anthony and Alex Emanuel, sophomore Ethan Gorsline, and freshmen Peyton Robinson and Aiden Doherty earned second-team honors for the Wolverines.

The IAC South Large School Division co-MVPs are SVEC seniors Jacob Banks and Addison Young.

FIRST TEAM
Forward
Griff Schillmoeller, junior, Waverly:
“Griff has a nose for the goal, and is someone we will be leaning on to lead us next season,” said Waverly coach Eric Ryck.

Schillmoeller had a school-record 23 goals this season,  and now has a school-record 45 goals for his career. He also doled out five assists.

Midfield
Charlie Larrabee, junior, Waverly:
“A solid and technically-gifted player, Charlie is the hub of our team,” said Ryck. “He is solid in possession and dangerous with both feet.

“As a coaching staff we will be looking for Charlie to really take control of the center of the park next year,” he added.

Larrabee scored three goals, and dished out three assists.

Other first-team midfielders are: SVEC senior Zeb Soper, and SVEC sophomores Noah Banks and Jason Lantz, and Newark Valley junior James Wales.

Defense
Sam Knight, junior, Waverly:
“Sam is the anchor of our back line, he rarely loses a battle, is sneaky fast, and a very intelligent defender,” said Ryck. “Having Sam in the back line is a huge confidence-builder for our players and coaching staff.”

Other first-team defenders are: SVEC seniors Darren Starkweather and David Vega, and Newark Valley junior Brady Hill.

Goalkeeper
The first-team goalkeeper is SVEC junior Kody Goble.

SECOND TEAM
Sheldon Huddleston, senior, Waverly:
Sheldon was our lone senior this year, and is a great technical player,” said Ryck. “He is a confident and shifty player, is very good with the ball at his feet attacking, as well as covering and defending.”

Huddleston had three assists on the season.

Ethan Gorsline, sophomore, Waverly: “Ethan is a very opportunistic player, he always finds himself in the right spot to make a difference on the pitch, and this made him our second-highest goal scorer this season in his first varsity season,” said Ryck.

Gorsline scored six goals, and had three assists.

Peyton Robinson, freshman, Waverly: “Peyton is a hard-working, athletic, and physical player,” said Ryck.  “As a freshman, he started all 16 games this season, and was near the top of the list for minutes played.

“He is technically solid and sees the field very well,” added Ryck.

Robinson scored three goals, and had three assists.

Alex Emanuel, junior, Waverly:  “Alex has generally been an attacking player for us, but this year we had to lean on his speed and technical ability to help solidify our back line,” said Ryck. “Alex was definitely up to the task.

“As our right back, Alex was great at locking down the right side defensively, as well as moving the ball out of the back and making runs forward to support our attack,” Ryck added.

Emanuel had one goal and one assist this season.

Nehemiah Anthony, junior, Waverly: “Nehemiah really came into his own this season, on both sides of the ball,” said Ryck. “He is a fast and athletic player, who thrives on the physical side of the game.

“As a defender, he was a huge part of our success, and was great at supporting our attack,” added Ryck.

Anthony netted two goals on the season, both in a huge comeback win over Notre Dame.

Aiden Doherty, freshman, Waverly: “This was Aiden’s first varsity season and he spent much of it between the pipes for us,” said Ryck. “He has great hands, and is a tough goalkeeper.”

Doherty tallied 38 saves this season.

Also named to the second team are: Notre Dame senior Guilherme Togo, Newark Valley senior Owen Salius, NV junior Zach Brodfuehrer, and NV sophomore Bela Krenner, and SVEC senior Taylor Brock.
