THE VALLEY — The 2022-23 winter campaign tips off tonight with the first wrestling matches and basketball games of the new season.

WRESTLING
Waverly at Mark Stephens Classic, 5 p.m. @ Horseheads:
The Wolverines open the season this weekend at the Mark Stephens Classic, a duals tournament that features five state-ranked teams in eight-team field.

Middletown is ranked 14th, and Penfield 22nd in Division 1, according to New York Wrestling News, while Canisteo-Greenwood is ranked third, Bolivar-Richburg 15th, and Waverly 22nd in Division 2. Horseheads is an honorable mention in Division 1.

The Wolverines will wrestle Bolivar-Richburg, Canisteo-Greenwood, and Hornell on Friday night. On Saturday, they will wrestle Monroe-Woodbury, Penfield, Horseheads, and Middletown.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Bradford-Susquehanna Counties Challenge
Sayre at Susquehanna, 6 p.m.:
The Redskins are coming off a 6-15 season in 2021-22, while the Sabers were 8-14 last year.

Last year, Sayre opened the season with a 50-45 win.

Wyalusing plays Blue Ridge in the other game.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Wellsboro at Sayre, 6 p.m. (No JV game):
The Lady Redskins are coming off an 0-17 season in 2021-22, and have lost 19 straight, while the Lady Hornets were 11-11 last year.

Wellsboro won the only meeting of the two teams last year, 38-16.

Johnson City Tip-Off Tournament
Athens at Johnson City, 8:30 p.m.:
The Lady Wildcats are coming off a 17-7 season in 2021-22, while Johnson City, also the Wildcats, were 10-9, and saw its season end with a loss to Maine-Endwelll in the Section IV, Class A title game.
