VALLEY SPORTS REPORT: WAVERLY'S VANDERPOOL, ATHENS' CHERESNOWSKY ARE GRUMPY GRIZZLY 'ATHLETES OF THE WEEK' (2023-01-08)

THE VALLEY — Waverly senior Zach Vanderpool banged out a pair of 700 series to help the Wolverines to a pair of sweeps, and Athens freshman Olivia Cheresnowsky tallied eight first-place finishes in two meets. They are the Valley Sports Report / Grumpy Grizzly "Athletes of the Week," for the week ending Jan. 7.

WAVERLY’S VANDERPOOL NAMED VSR BOYS "ATHLETE OF THE WEEK"
Vanderpool shot a 762 series on games of 258, 237, and 267 Tuesday to lead Waverly to a sweep of first-place Newark Valley.

On Thursday, Vanderpool rolled a 723 series on games of 277, 235, and 211, but was a bit overshadowed by his teammate freshman Tristan Campbell, who rolled a 300 game.

ATHENS’ CHERESNOWSKY NAMED VSR GIRLS "ATHLETE OF THE WEEK"
Cheresnowsky helped Athens to a 120-44 win over Milton Tuesday with wins in the 100-yard freestyle, and the 100-yard backstroke. She also swam on a pair of first-place relays.

On Thursday, Cheresnowsky duplicated Tuesday’s results, winning the 100 free and 100 back, while swimming on a pair of winning relays in a 90-89 loss to Elk Lake.
