NTL JV BASKETBALL: ATHENS PULLS OUT 43-37 WIN OVER SAYRE (2023-01-20)

SAYRE - Athens closed out the game with a 9-3 run over the final 4 1/2 minutes to pull out a 43-37 win over Sayre here Thursday night in NTL junior varsity boys basketball action.

Athens led 7-6 after the first quarter, but Sayre tied the game at 14-14 heading into the halftime locker room.

Jase Babcock canned a trio of 3-pointers, and scored 11 points, and Nichola Jacob added a 3-pointer as Athens outscored Sayre, 16-13, in the third quarter to take a 30-27 lead into the final seven minutes.

Zach Senese connected on a 3-pointer and scored five points in the third quarter, and Will Trump added four points to keep the junior Redskins close.

Sayre tied the game at 32-all, and again at 34-all, before the junior Wildcats closed out the game with a 9-3 run.

Connor Mosher made 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Mosher led Athens with 12 points, while Babcock scored 11, Jacob and Eli Hobday added five points apiece, and Davin Spencer and Jack Cheresnowsky chipped in with four points apiece.

Senese led Sayre with 12 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, while Ryan Ressler and Will Trump added four points apiece.

Athens returns to action Saturday afternoon when it hosts Wellsboro, while Sayre travels to Wyalusing Tuesday.
