IAC JV GIRLS BASKETBALL: WAVERLY FALLS TO UNBEATEN WHITNEY POINT, 37-25 (2023-01-23)
Valley Sports ReportWHITNEY POINT — Unbeaten Whitney Point overcame a slow start, and pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 37-25 win over Waverly here Friday night in IAC Large School junior varsity girls basketball crossover action.
With the loss, Waverly falls to 8-6 and into a first-place tie with Watkins Glen atop the IAC South Large School standings.
Waverly led 7-6 after the first eight minutes, but the Lady Golden Eagles used a 9-6 advantage in the second quarter to take a 15-13 halftime lead. They outscored the junior Wolverines, 9-7, in the third quarter to stretch their lead to 24-20 entering the final eight minutes.
Despite going 0-for-12 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, Whitney Point put the game away with a 13-5 run.
Maci Wheeler led Waverly with 15 points, including two 3-pointers, and Emma Richards-Randall and Lauryn Welles scored four points apiece.
Waverly returns to action Feb. 1 when it hosts Notre Dame.
