NTL BOYS BASKETBALL: ATHENS ROLLS OVER CANTON, 58-22 (19 PHOTOS) (2023-01-24)

ATHENS - Athens used balanced scoring to run away in a 58-22 win over Canton here Tuesday night in NTL boys basketball action.

The coaches and many of the spectators wore yellow shirts for Avedium, a non-profit organization that empowers youth to shatter the silence surrounding depression, suicide, and other issues facing teens.

Sophomore Kolsen Keathley scored seven points, including an old-fashioned three-point play, in the first quarter, and junior Korey Miller added five points, including a 3-pointer, to help the Wildcats to an 18-6 lead after the first eight minutes.

Sophomore Jase Babcock scored five points in the second quarter, including a conventional three-point play, and senior Chris Mitchell added four points in a 15-6 run that gave Athens a 33-12 lead at the half.

Athens continued to build its lead in the third quarter with a 14-10 advantage, fueled by five points from senior Mason Lister, to take a 47-22 lead into the fourth quarter. Kyle Kapichok scored all 10 of Canton’s points in the stanza.

Athens closed the game with a 12-0 run in the final eight minutes.

Mitchell led Athens with 11 points, six rebounds, and three steals, while Keathley had nine points and nine rebounds, and Lister had seven points, 10 rebounds, five assists, four steals, and one blocked shot.

Miller had seven points, four assists, and two steals in the win, while Babcock had seven points and one blocked shot, senior Carson Smith scored seven points, senior Lucas Horton chipped in with four points, four boards, and one blocked shot, and senior Lucas Kraft dished out three assists, and blocked one shot.

Kapichok led Canton with 13 points.

Athens, now 11-4, travels to Wellsboro Thursday.
