ON TAP TODAY: HOOPS, WRESTLING, BOWLING ACTION IN VALLEY ON A BUSY TUESDAY (2023-01-30)

Valley Sports Report
THE VALLEY — There is plenty of action in the Valley for local sports fans tonight, with the Athens and Sayre boys hosting divisional rivals on the hardwoods, and Tioga girls also hosting divisional rival, while Waverly finishes off the 2022-23 dual season with a home match against Marathon.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Waverly (12-2 overall, 9-0 IAC) at Notre Dame (7-7, 6-4), 5:30 p.m. JV start:
The Wolverines are coming off back-to-back wins at Trumansburg (67-51) and at home against Section III Cazenovia (70-59) on Friday and Saturday, while the Crusaders topped Watkins Glen, 66-63 Friday.

Notre Dame’s win at Watkins Glen helped Waverly clinch its first division title since 2018 Friday night.

Waverly won the first meeting of the two teams, 77-55, on Jan. 14.

Tioga (8-5, 6-3 IAC Small) at Newfield (15-1, 12-0), 5:30 p.m. JV start:
The Tigers are coming off an 82-60 win over Marathon Friday, while the state-ranked Trojans hammered O-M, 80-37.

Newfield, ranked fifth in the state in Class C, won the first meeting, 59-57, at Tioga on Dec. 17.

NEB (7-7, 3-3) at Sayre (8-10, 5-1), 6 p.m. JV start: The Redskins are coming off a 75-41 loss at Blue Ridge Saturday, while the Panthers dropped a 53-49 decision to Canton.

Sayre leads the division by 1 game over North Penn-Liberty and Canton, and controls its own destiny. NEB is two games back at 3-3, but a win tonight could keep them alive in a tightly-packed race.

Sayre is seventh in the District 4, Class AA power rankings, and NEB is eighth. A win tonight could be the difference between sixth and eighth in the standings.

NEB won the first meeting of the season, 49-45, at Sayre on Dec. 21.

Wyalusing (3-14, 0-6 NTL Large) at Athens (11-6, 3-3)), 6 p.m. JV start: The Wildcats are coming off a 56-36 loss at Wellsboro Friday, while the Rams lost to Canton, 52-45.

The Wildcats are currently fourth in the power rankings in Class 4A, but the difference between third and fifth is roughly the win, so they need to finish strong.

Athens won the first meeting, at Wyalusing, 68-39, on on Dec. 21.
