IAC BOYS BOWLING: WAVERLY LOCKS UP DIVISION TITLE WITH SWEEP OF WATKINS GLEN (2023-02-07)

WAVERLY — The Waverly boys locked up the IAC Large School Division with a sweep of Watkins Glen here Tuesday afternoon, while the Lady Wolverines dropped a 3-1 decision in bowling action at the Valley Bowling Center.

BOYS
Waverly 4, Watkins Glen 0

The Wolverines had three 600 series in a lopsided sweep of Watkins Glen to finish the season with a 55-5 record.

Waverly won the first game 1,005 to 725, then rolled an 1,121 to top Watkins Glen’s 882 in the second game. The Wolverines closed out the sweep with a 967-787 win for a total-pinfall victory of 3,093 to 2,394.

Senior Ashton Pritchard led Waverly with a 626 series on games of 194, 216, and 216, while junior Trenton Sindoni shot a 624 on games of 224, 211 and 190, and freshman Tristan Campbell fired a 614 on games of 181, 232, and 201.

Freshman Derek Johnson had a 594 for the Wolverines, including games of 201 and 256, while senior Zach Vanderpool added a 582, including games of 205 and 206, and senior Mike Cole tacked on a 498 series.

Eighth-grader Mason Apgar shot a 576 in reserve for Waverly, and senior Landyn Gunderson had a 569.

Mikel Cody led Watkins Glen with a 570 series, and Corbin Groves shot a 554.

GIRLS
Watkins Glen 3, Waverly 1

Watkins Glen topped Waverly, which was without out its No. 2 bowler, junior Rachel Houseknecht, 3-1.

The Lady Senecas won the first game 762-749, but Waverly bounced back with a 785-73 win in the second game to take a 9-pin lead in total pinfall. Watkins Glen closed out the match with an 854-691 win to take the pinfall point by a count of 2,379 to 2,225.

Senior Victoria Houseknecht led Waverly with a 559 series, while senior Shantilly Decker shot a 461, and 7th-grader Karis Hayes had a  426.

Sophomore Serenity Conklin added a 407 for the Lady Wolverines, and 8th-grader Emily Houseknecht tacked on a 372.

Aubrey Cowan led Watkins Glen with a 554 series, and Ava Cowan had a 552.

The Lady Wolverines finish second in the Large School Division to Union Springs.

Waverly will host the IAC Championships Saturday at the Valley Bowling Center.
