IAC BOYS BASKETBALL: WAVERLY'S TOMASSO NAMED DIVISIONAL MVP; TWO TEAMMATES EARN ALL-STAR HONORS (2023-02-15)

WAVERLY — Waverly junior Joey Tomasso was recently the Most Valuable Player in the IAC South Large School Division, while two of his teammates received all-star recognition in recent voting by the league’s boys basketball coaches.

Junior Jake VanHouten was a first-team selection, and junior Jay Pipher earned a second-team nod.

Tomasso, who can score from anywhere on the floor, is averaging 30.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 2.7 steals per game.

He is shooting 51.7 percent from the field, including a 36.9 percent clip from behind the 3-point arc, with 45 3-pointers. He has 117 made free throws, and is shooting 66.7 percent from the line.

FIRST TEAM
Joey Tomasso, junior, Waverly:

Jake VanHouten, junior, Waverly: Long and athletic, VanHouten made a big impact for the divisional champs in his first varsity season.

He averages 10.4 points, 8.9 rebounds per game, 2 steals, 1.2 blocks, and 0.8 assists per game, while shooting 54.6 percent from the field. He has also made 11 3-pointers, and is shooting 37.9 percent from behind the arc.

Also named to the first team were: Watkins Glen senior Jacob Yontz, Notre Dame junior Jeremiah Parker, and Newark Valley junior Dan Truesdail.

SECOND TEAM
Jay Pipher, junior, Waverly:
A defensive stopper, Pipher made a much bigger impact on the offensive end of the floor for the Wolverines this season.

He averages 8 points, 2.3 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 2.9 steals per game. He has knocked down 26 3-pointers, and is shooting 37.1 percent from field.

Also named to the first team were: Newark Valley junior Danny Pirger, Watkins Glen senior Joseph Sutterby, Notre Dame senior Shane Maloney, and Notre Dame sophomore Finn Schweitzer.
