NEW YORK STATE WRESTLING: TIOGA'S SILVESTRI, DUNCANSON, BELLIS TOP SEEDS AT DIVISION 2 CHAMPIONSHIPS; WAVERLY'S HILLS, FOUR OTHER TIOGA GRAPPLERS TOP-5 SEEDS (2023-02-19)

ALBANY — Tioga juniors Gianni Silvestri, a two-time state champ, Ousmane Duncanson a reigning state champ, and Caden Bellis, a runner-up last year, will be top seeds in their respective weight classes this weekend at the New York State Division 2 wrestling championships.

Four other Tigers — freshmen Logan Bellis and Jayden Duncanson, and juniors Tyler Roe and Drew Macumber — are seeded in the top-5 of their weight classes, while Waverly’s top seed is sophomore Kam Hills, who is a 5-seed at 285 pounds.

Tioga and Waverly both had two wrestlers in one weight class qualify for States. Junior Deakon Bailey will join Silvestri in the 126-pound bracket, and freshman Troy Beeman will join Kam Hills in the 285-pound bracket.

The following lists all the Valley wrestlers and their opening-round match-ups, as well as the top four seeds in each weight class:

102 pounds:
Logan Bellis (35-9) is the second seed. He receives a bye into the round-of-16, where he’ll face the winner of the match between 15th-seed junior Krish Gandhi (23-7) of Horace Mann and 18th-seed 8th-grader Brendan O’Sullivan (19-15) of Pearl River.

The top seed at 102 is Norwich 8th-grader Maverick Beckwith (32-5), while Newfane junior Jacob Lucinski (41-7) is the third seed, and unbeaten Tommy Aiello (32-0) of John Glenn is the fourth seed.

110 pounds:
BGAH junior Darren Florance (32-1) is the top seed at 110 pounds, while Unatego-Unadilla Valley sophomore Caleb Cole (34-3) is the second seed, Shoreham-Wading River 8th-grader Gavin Mangano (46-0) is the third seed, and Honeoye Falls-Lima freshman Chris Noto (39-3) is the fourth seed.

118 pounds: Jayden Duncanson (36-4) is the fourth seed. He receives a bye into the round-of-16, where he will face the winner of the match between 13th-seed senior James Carlock (31-7) of Collegiate School and 20th-seed Ewan Celestine (31-9) of Red Hook.

Copenhagen junior Chase Nevills (35-1) is the top seed at 118, while BGAH senior Joey Florance (29-4) is the second seed, and Addison junior Cade Sands (37-2) is the third seed.

Three of Jayden Duncanson’s losses this season were to Florance, and the other to Sands.

126 pounds: Silvestri (40-1) is the top seed.  He receives a bye into the round-of-16, where he will face the winner of the match between 17th-seed junior Trey Buchholz (45-1) of Bolivar-Richburg and 16th-seed 8th-grader Cyler Baer (30-12) of Gouverneur.

Honeoye Falls-Lima sophomore Wayne Wiseman (41-7) is the second seed at 126 pounds, while Chenango Valley’s Trevor Cortright (39-3) is the third seed, and Honeoye-Falls Lima freshman Andrew Spaulding (30-11) is the fourth seed.

Silvestri is 3-0 this season against Cortright, including a 4-2 sudden-victory decision in the finals of the Section IV Championships.

Bailey (29-13) is the 13th seed at 126 pounds, and will square off with 20th-seed senior Blake Hagerman of Lake Shore in the opening round. The winner will face Spaulding in the round-of-16.

132 pounds:
Roe (38-6) is the third seed. He receives a bye into the round-of-16, where he will face the winner of the match between 19th-seed senior Tiki Graham (14-9) of Eagle Academy and 14th-seed senior Jack Godoy (20-3) of Seaford.

Junior Brayden Fahrbach (30-0) of Mount Sinai is the top seed, while sophomore Aidan Gillings (44-4) of Newfane is the second seed, and Honeoye Falls-Lima senior Jazz Spaulding (33-8).

Roe split a pair of decisions with Jazz Spaulding at the Windsor Christmas Tournament, and lost via fall to Gillings there.

138 pounds: Caden Bellis (29-1) is the top seed. He receives a bye into the round-of-16, where he will face the winner of the match between 17th-seed senior Vincent Daidone (21-7) of Bayport-Blue Point and 16th-seed junior Juston Dvorak (19-9) of Locust Valley.

Honeoye-Falls Lima senior Nick Noto (33-4) is the second seed at 138, while Alexander senior Benny Merrill (33-4) is the third seed, and Jordan-Elbridge junior Jack Lamson (40-1) is the fourth seed.

Caden Bellis beat Noto, 5-1, in the finals of the Windsor Christmas Tournament.

145 pounds: Macumber (33-5) is the fifth seed. He receives a bye into the round-of-16, where he will face the winner of the match between 21st-seed sophomore Jack Brown (23-11) of Beekmantown and 12th-seed senior Trent Buchanowski (15-2) of Chautauqua Lake.

South Seneca senior Caleb Sweet (39-1) is the top seed at 145 pounds, while Canisteo-Greenwood sophomore Colton Havens (50-7) is the second seed, Fonda-Fultonville senior Owen Hicks (40-3) is the third seed, and Bayport-Blue Point junior Kyle Barber (26-5) is the fourth seed.

152 pounds: Waverly senior Connor Stotler (22-10) is the 13th seed. He will face 20th-seed freshman Alex Schiffauer (28-12) in the opening round. The winner will face fourth-seed senior Devon Bogie (29-7) of Eagle Academy.

Collegiate School Sean Tansey (44-5) is the top seed at 152 pounds, while Gouverneur junior Vandavian Way (38-2) is the second seed, and Central Valley Academy senior Sixx Cook (46-2) is the third seed.

160 pounds: Ousmane Duncanson (33-0) is the top seed. He receives a bye into the round-of-16, where he will face the winner of the match between 17th-seed senior Christian Hockx (31-5) of Saugerties and 16th-seed junior Callum Jones (28-3) of Center Moriches.

South Seneca senior Luke Dendis (34-5) is the second seed, while Bolivar-Richburg sophomore Tayvn MacDonnell (43-4) is the third seed, and Windsor junior Mason McCombs (27-6) is the fourth seed.

Ousmane Duncanson is 2-0 this season against McCombs.

Waverly senior Braeden Hills (29-13) is the 20th-seed and will square off with 13th-seed senior Aidan Lukas (27-11) of Seaford in the opening round. The winner will face McCombs in the quarterfinals.

Seven of Braeden Hills’ losses this season came to wrestlers seeded in the top-6 in this bracket — three to Ousmane Duncanson, two to McCombs, one to MacDonnell, and one to sixth-seed Brodie Little (42-12) of Falconer. Another loss came to Canister-Greenwood’s Beau Zeh (52-5), the fifth seed at 152.

172 pounds:
Holland-Patent senior Justin Koenig (41-1) is the top seed at 172 pounds, while Norwich senior Mason Edwards (21-1) is the second seed, Sidney senior Trevor Harrington (35-6) is the third seed, and Cold Spring Harbor sophomore Greyson Meek (36-3) is the fourth seed.

189 pounds: Waverly 8th-grader Matthias Welles (28-10) is the eighth seed. He receives a bye into the round-of-16, where he will face ninth-seed senior Hunter Page (29-4) of Oxford-Greene.

Welles beat Page, 6-3, in the semifinals of the Section IV Championships last weekend.

Whitehall senior Troy Austin (39-1) is the top seed, while Chittenango senior Andrew Bailey (34-0) is the second seed, Dolgeville senior Jared Bilinski (32-2) is the third seed, and Byron Bergen junior Malachi Smith (27-0) is the fourth seed.

215 pounds: Army-bound senior Sam Sorenson (46-0) of Homer is the top seed at 215 pounds, while Salem-Cambridge senior Evan Day (27-4) is the second seed, Windsor senior Garrett Bidwell (33-5) is the third seed, and Iroquois junior Trevor Barry (22-1) is the fourth seed.

285 pounds: Kam Hills is the fifth seed, and Troy Beeman (26-9) is the 12th seed. Kam Hills receives a bye into the round-of-16, where he will face the winner of the match between 21st -seed sophomore Luke Herendeen (28-12) and Beeman.

Army-bound senior Tristan Hitchcock (43-0) of Warrensburg / Lake George is the top seed, while Bolivar-Richburg senior Trent Sibble (47-1) is the second seed, North Rose-Wolcott senior Noah Wazinski (39-2) is the third seed, and Beekmantown junior Connor Bushey (25-3) is the fourth seed.

Kam Hills has pinned Beeman in each of the last two weeks — the finals of the Section IV, Class B Qualifier, and the semis of the Section IV Championships. Beeman also has losses this season to Sibble, Bidwell (third seed at 215), Donovan Mitchell (11th seed at 215), and Logan Jamison (11th seed at 285).
