THE VALLEY — Waverly senior Zach Vanderpool led the Wolverines to a fourth-place finish at the N.Y. State Boys Bowling Championships Sunday, while Athens freshman wrestler Anaiah Kolesar reached the podium at the Pa. Girls State Championships. They are the Valley Sports Report / Grumpy GrizzlyAthletes of the Week,” for the week ending March 12.

WAVERLY’S VANDERPOOL NAMED GRUMPY GRIZZLY BOYS “ATHLETE OF THE WEEK”
Vanderpool rolled a six-game set of 1,268 to lead Waverly to a fourth-place finish in the N.Y. State Boys Bowling Division 2 Championships.

Vanderpool’s six-game average of 211.33 placed him 10th out of 57 bowlers. He rolled games of 216, 214, 237, 225, 152 and 224. His 237 was the fifth-best score of the morning session.

Waverly’s Derek Johnson and Ashton Pritchard (bowling).

ATHENS KOLESAR NAMED GRUMPY GRIZZLY GIRLS “ATHLETE OF THE WEEK”
Kolesar, an NEB student, posted a 3-2 record Sunday to reach the podium, placing seventh at the Pa. Girls Wrestling Championships.

Kolesar, who was a runner-up last week at the Northeast Regionals, won her match via second-period fall, then lost a 2-0 decision to the eventual runner-up in the quarterfinals.

After a major decision win in the consolation bracket, Kolesar dropped a 5-0 decision in the “blood round” She won a 6-2 decision in the seventh-place match.
