John Worthing, a redshirt sophomore at Clarion University, won his preliminary-round match in the 174-pound bracket here Thursday afternoon at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
The 33rd seed, Worthing, now 20-9, scored an 8-4 win over 32nd-seeded Will Miller (24-11) of Apalachin State.
Worthing recorded a takedown in the first period, and led 2-1 after the first three minutes.
He chose down to start the second period, and about 45 seconds into the stanza, was able to turn into Miller and register a reversal for a 4-1 lead, but Miller scored another quick escape to make it 4-2.
Miller recorded another escape early in the third period to close the gap to 4-3, but Worthing was able to get in on a single-leg near the edge of the circle with to take a 6-3 lead midway through the final two minutes.
Miller trimmed the deficit to 6-4 with another escape, but Worthing stuffed a Miller takedown attempt in the closing seconds, and secured the win with his third takedown of the bout.
Worthing will now face two-time defending national champion and top-seeded Carter Starocci (19-0) of Penn State in the round-of-32.
