VALLEY SPORTS REPORT: WAVERLY'S VANDERPOOL, DECKER HEADLINE SUPER 7 AS 'BOWLERS OF THE YEAR;' WAVERLY'S COLE TABBED TOP NEWCOMER (2023-03-17)

THE VALLEY — Waverly senior Zach Vanderpool led the Wolverines to its best finish ever at the New York State Championships, and finished 10th in the individual standings. He is the 2022-23 Valley Sports Report "Boys Bowler of the Year.

Waverly senior Shantilly Decker was an integral part of the Lady Wolverines success this year, and posted the third best average in the IAC. She is the 2022-23 Valley Sports Report "Girls Bowler of the Year.”

Waverly senior Michael Cole, after a solid first season with the Wolverines, came up big at States. He is the 2022-23 “Newcomer of the Year.

(NOTE: Because there are only two Valley schools with bowling programs, the Super 7 is a co-ed team.)

Vanderpool, now a four-time “Bowler of the Year,” led the IAC with a 215 average, and had an IAC-high 762 series. His high game of the season was a 277.

Vanderpool won individual gold at the Section IV State Qualifier with a nine-game set of 2,105 (233.89 average), including a 762 series, leading the Wolverines to the team title in the process.

Vanderpool also won the Section IV, Class C gold with a 706 series.

At States, Vanderpool rolled a six-game set of 1,268 (211.33 average) to lead the Wolverines to a fourth-place finish. He had series of 667 and 601.

Decker had a 183 average this season, which was third-best in the IAC. She had a 656 high series, which was third-highest in the IAC this season, and had a high game of 256.

Decker finished eighth at the Section IV State Qualifier with a nine-game set of 1,740 (193.3 average). She rolled series of 601 and 624 to finish up the qualifier.

Decker finished sixth at the IAC Championships with a 582 series.

Cole had a 173 average on the season, which was 20th-best in the IAC in 2022-23. His high series on the regular season with a 561, and his high game was a 220.

At States, Cole, after not bowling in the morning session, stepped in for the afternoon and had a career-high 624 series on games of 220, 212 and 192. He placed 43rd and his 208 average was tops among the 25 competitors who did not bowl all six games.

Ashton Pritchard, senior, Waverly: Pritchard finished his fifth varsity season with a 197 average, which was good for fifth-best in the IAC.

Pritchard had the 10th best series in the IAC this season with a 678, and had a high game of 277.

He finished a team-best sixth at the IAC Championships with a 667 series, and averaged 195 at the Section IV State Qualifier.

Pritchard finished 25th at States with a six-game set of 1,099 (183.2 average).

Rachel Houseknecht, junior, Waverly: Houseknecht had a 181 average, which was fourth-best in the IAC in 2022-23. Her 644 high series was fourth-best in the IAC, and she had a high game of 235.

She finished second at the IAC Championships with a 628 series.

Houseknecht finished 21st at the State Qualifier with a nine-game set of 1,584 (176 average).

Derek Johnson, freshman, Waverly: Johnson finished the season with a 192 average, which was seventh-best in the IAC this season.

His high series was a 692, which was ninth-best in the IAC, and his game was a 257.

Johnson finished 13th at the IACs with a 608 series, and averaged 195 at Section IV State Qualifier.

At States, Johnson was 18th with a six-game set of 1,149 (191.5 average).

Tristan Campbell, freshman, Waverly:
Campbell finished the season with a 187 average, which was good for 10th in the IAC.

He had a 678 series, which was 10th-best in the IAC, and he rolled the only 300 game in the league in 2022-23.

Gage Cain, senior, Tioga:
Cain finished the season with a 184 average, which was good for 12th-best in the IAC this season.

His high series on the season was a 70, which was fourth-best in 2022-23. HIs high game was a 258.

Cain finished ninth at the IAC Championships with a 645 series, and rolled a 566 to finish 16th at the Section IV, Class D Championships.
