VALLEY SPORTS REPORT: TIOGA'S HARRINGTON HEADLINES SUPER 7 AS 'COACH OF THE WINTER' (2023-03-20)

THE VALLEY — State titles just keep on coming for the Tioga wrestling program, and coach Kris Harrington has the program on a historic roll. He is the Valley Sports Report 2022-23 “Coach of the Winter.

Tioga finished the dual season with a 13-0 record, beating Central Valley Academy 49-18 in the finals of the New York State Division 2 Duals. The Tigers have won 31 duals in a row.

Harrington has led the Tigers to six consecutive Section IV title, and fourth straight team titles at the New York State Division 2 Championships. They’ve also won its four consecutive Section IV Duals title, and two New York State Division 2 title in a row.

The Tigers also advanced eight wrestlers to the state championships, and brought home seven medals, including a pair of state champs, two runners-up, and a third-place finisher. In the last four seasons, Tioga has sent 27 wrestlers to states, and brought home 23 state medals, including seven state champions, five runners-up, and two third-place finishers. The numbers are even more impressive when you add in Emily Sindoni's two state titles.

Devan Witman, wrestling, Waverly: Witman has been at the helm of a re-building project with the Waverly wrestling program over the last several years. That project is officially complete after this season, which saw the Wolverines finish second at the Section IV Duals, and advance five wrestlers to the Division 2 Championships.

Lou Judson, boys basketball, Waverly: Judson led Waverly to 19-3 record, including an 8-0 mark in the division for a division title, and a 14-0 record in the IAC. Waverly also topped Lansing to win an overall IAC Large School championship.

The Wolverines advanced to the Section IV, Class B semifinals, where it lost to eventual champ Owego. Their other losses came to Section V champ Wellsville, and Section IV runner-up Chenango Forks.

Jon Ward, boys basketball, Sayre: Despite underwhelming preseason expectations, Sayre’s rookie coach Jon Ward led the Redskins to a 12-10 regular-season record, the program’s first-ever NTL Small School title, and berths in the NTL Showdown, and District 4, Class AA playoffs. They finished 12-12.

Bob Kelly, girls basketball, Waverly: Kelly led the Lady Wolverines to a 16-5 season, with three of those losses coming to divisional rival Newark Valley, which repeated as Sectional champ. The Lady Wolverines won the Christmas Tournament, beating NTL Large School champ Towanda in the title game.

Bob Fauver, girls basketball, Sayre: Fauver returned to the sidelines after an extended absence from the girls game, and led Sayre to a four-win season. It may not sound like a big deal, but the Lady Redskins had lost 19 in a row coming into the season and were not competitive whatsoever in 2021-22.

After opening the season at 0-10, Sayre won three in a row, and four of six. They finished the season at 4-18.

Brian Card, boys basketball, Tioga: Despite a slow start after the extended football season kept most of his players from the hardwoods until the eve of start of the regular season, Card guided his team into the Section IV, Class C championship game.
