Valley Sports Report
Tioga junior Evan Sickler was named the Section IV, Class C “Player of the Year,” and Tioga’s Brian Card was named Class C “Coach of the Year” in recent voting by the Section IV chapter of the Basketball Coaches Association of New York.

Sickler and Waverly junior Joey Tomasso were also named BCANY All-Section IV first team all-stars.

Sickler averaged 22.5 points, 9.1 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 2.3 steals per game. He shot 48.2 percent from the field, including a 38.4 percent clip from behind the 3-point arc. He knocked down 58 3-pointers on the season, and made 83 free throws.

Despite a slow start after the extended football season kept most of his players from the hardwoods until the eve of start of the regular season, Card guided his team into the Section IV, Class C championship game.

The Tigers went 15-9 on the season, with two losses to state-ranked Moravia, two losses to state-ranked Newfield, and losses to state-ranked Waverly, Maine-Endwell and Union-Endicott.

Tomasso averaged a school-record 30.9 points per game in a season that also saw him break the single-game scoring record with 49 points. He shot 51.8 percent from the field, and knocked down 50 3-pointers this season. He also averaged 4.6 rebounds, and 2.7 steals per game.

Also named to the first team were: Johnson City’s Zubayr Griffen, Seton Catholic’s Andrew Erickson, Horseheads’ Jeremy Truax, Ithaca’s Luke Little, Chenango Forks’ Trevor Warpus, Maine-Endwell’s Cullen Green, Owego’s John Babgel, U-E’s Larry Morse, Elmira’s Chris Woodard, Corning’s Logan Booker, and Jackson Casey.

Second team selections were: Marathon’s Connor Holland, Delhi’s Luke Schnabel, South Kortright’s Connor Quarino, Ithaca’s Justin Yearwood, Johnson City’s Qsan Tucker, U-E’s Mekai Lindsey, Susquehanna Valley’s Luke Kariam, U-E’s Nick Lang, Horseheads’ Amari Truax, Owego’s Joe Bangel, Elmira’s Anthony Kitching, Ithaca’s William Holmes, and M-E’s Aiden Fenkl.
