H.S. WRESTLING: TIOGA ADVANCES FOUR TO QUARTERFINALS AT HIGH SCHOOL NATIONALS (2023-03-24)

VIRGINIA BEACH — Tioga advanced four wrestlers — senior Emily Sindoni, and juniors Gianni Silvestri, Caden Bellis, and Ousmane Duncanson — into the quarterfinals of the National High School Coaches Association High School Nationals here Friday afternoon.

Tioga also has junior Tyler Roe, and freshmen Jayden Duncanson, Connor Streeter, and Logan Bellis still alive in the consolation bracket. All four won at least one match before being knocked into wrestlebacks.

The top-seed in the 126-pound bracket, Sindoni, who is ranked No. 1 in the nation at 120 pounds, registered three wins to advance to the quarterfinals.

She opened the tournament with a 37-second fall of Serenity Perez, then blanked PIAA fourth-place finisher Zoe Furman of Montgomery, 9-0.

In the round-of-16, Sindoni pinned McKinley Jovanovic of Maryland in 56 seconds.

Sindoni will face Gianna Daniele of Massachusetts in the quarterfinals. Daniele registered three falls in a combined 67 seconds to advance to the quarterfinals.

JUNIOR DIVISION
At 126 pounds, fifth-seeded Gianni Silvestri wiped out an early 4-1 deficit in his opening match with a five-point move in the second period on his way to a 9-4 win over Devin Carter of Minnesota.

In the round-of-64, Silvestri scored a takedown in the opening 12 seconds, then pinned Brayden Wilson of Alabama in 1:49.

In the round-of-32, Silvestri used a reversal to start the second period, and a takedown later in the period to win a 4-2 decision over Tye Linser of Indiana.

Silvestri used five takedowns to forge a 12-4 win over PIAA state qualifier Tyler Adams of York Suburban in the round-of-16.

Silvestri will now face Chautauqua Lake’s fourth-seeded Jordan Joslyn, who topped Silvestri, 6-4, in the New York state finals last month.

At 138 pounds, Caden Bellis, the second seed, pinned Griffin Thomas of South Carolina in 1:37 in the opening round, then scored an escape and a takedown in the second period for a 3-0 win over two-time Texas state bronze medalist Jake Moon in the round-of-64.

In the round-of-32, Bellis took an early 4-0 lead with a four-point move in the first period on his way to an 8-0 major decision over state qualifier Chase Bish of New Jersey.

Bellis pulled out a thriller in the round-of-16, scoring a takedown with 6 seconds remaining for a 3-2 win over Demetrius Salaries — a two-time Montana state bronze medalist.

Bellis will face Brayden Robison of Utah in the quarterfinals.

Also at 138 pounds, Tyler Roe forged a 6-2 win over Juahavyn Buck of Georgia in the opening round. Roe lost via first-period fall to Justin Holly of New Jersey in the round-of-64.

Ousmane Duncanson, the third seed at 152 pounds, scored a pair of first-period falls to start the tournament.

Duncanson decked Clayton Seigner of South Carolina in 52 seconds in the opening round, then flattened Anthony Cummons of Manheim Township, Pa. in 58 seconds.

In the round-of-32, Duncanson scored a five-point move in the second period to take an 8-0 lead on his way to a 9-3 win over Logan Cole of Montana.

Duncanson scored four takedowns in a 12-4 major decision over Sean Crews of Georgia in the round-of-16.

Duncanson will face Christian Griggs of Alabama in the quarterfinals.

FRESHMAN DIVISION

At 126 pounds, Jayden Duncanson, the second seed, opened the tournament with a third-period escape to pull out a 1-0 win over Dominic Wilson of Texas. He followed that up with a 15-0 technical fall over Zander Samargia of Alabama in the round-of-64.

In the round-of-32, Duncanson used a four-point move in the third period to take a 10-3 lead on his way to a 10-5 win over Jesse Meza of California.

In the round-of-16, Duncanson dropped a 4-1 decision to fellow New Yorker Brendon Katimbang of Chaminade High School.

At 106 pounds, Connor Streeter scored a 7-0 win over Alex Sardelis of Virginia in the opening round, then lost via fall in 63 seconds to Gage Anderson of Utah in the round-of-64.

At 113 pounds, Logan Bellis opened with a 5-2 win over Logan Letner of Ohio in the round-of-128, but  in the round-of-64, Bellis dropped a 6-0 decision to PIAA state qualifier Drew Scherer of Boiling Springs.
