H.S. WRESTLING: ATHENS' COURTNEY POSTS 2-2 RECORD AT NHSCA JUNIOR HIGH NATIONALS (2023-03-25)
Valley Sports ReportVIRGINIA BEACH — Athens senior Jake Courtney posted a 2-2 record in the 138-pound bracket of the Senior Division here Friday and Saturday at the National High School Coaches Association Junior High Nationals.
In his opening-round match, Courtney fought off his back to score a second-period fall of Thomas Morales of Arizona.
Morales scored a takedown midway through the first period, then exposed Courtney’s back for three near-fall points late in the stanza, but Courtney closed the gap to 5-2 with a reversal moments later.
Late in the second period, Courtney took Morales directly to his back for the fall at 3:50.
In the round-of-32, Courtney scored a takedown with 41 seconds remaining in the third period to tie the bout at 3-3, but New Jersey’s Shawn Redfield took him directly to his back in the opening moments of the sudden-victory period for a fall.
In the second consolation round-of-32, Courtney wiped out a 1-0 deficit with a takedown and three near-fall points in the final 47 seconds of the match in a 5-1 win over Joseph Aldrich of New Jersey.
Courtney’s tournament came to an end with a 4-2 loss to Conner Kimbrough of Georgia in the first consolation round-of-16.
After a scoreless first period, Kimbrough scored a takedown midway through the second period, and rode out the final 69 seconds to take a 2-0 lead into the third period.
After Kimbrough upped his lead to 3-0 with an escape, Courtney registered a takedown with 1:27 remaining in the third period to close the gap to 3-2.
Kimbrough escaped with 42 seconds remaining, then fended off Courtney’s takedown attempts to preserve the win.
