H.S. WRESTLING: TIOGA'S SINDONI WILL DEFEND TITLE, BELLIS TO WRESTLE FOR THIRD — FIVE TIGERS EARN ALL-AMERICAN STATUS (2023-03-25)

VIRGINIA BEACH — Tioga senior Emily Sindoni earned a chance to defend her title, and junior Caden Bellis has a chance to duplicate last year’s third-place finish here Sunday in the medal round of the National High School Coaches Association Junior High Nationals.

Juniors Ousmane Duncanson and Gianni Silvestri, and freshman Jayden Duncanson also earned All-American status Saturday. Ousmane Duncanson will wrestle for fifth place Sunday, while Silvestri, who placed fifth at 120 pounds last year, and the younger Duncanson will both wrestle for seventh place.

The top eight in each weight class earn All-American status.

Sindoni, the top seed at 126 pounds, opened the day with a fall in 57 seconds over eighth-seeded Gianna Daniele of Massachusetts in the quarterfinals to punch her ticket to the semifinals, and All-American status.

Sindoni, the defending champ at 120 pounds, guaranteed herself a chance at defending her title with a 14-3 major decision over Evelyn Holmes-Smith in the semifinals.

Sindoni scored a takedown, and two near-fall points in the first period to take a 4-0 lead. She added another takedown, and three near-fall points to extend her lead to 9-0 midway through the second period.

After an escape, Sindoni recorded another takedown for an 11-1 lead heading into the final two minutes.

Holmes-Smith scored a takedown in the third period, but Sindoni answered with an escape and takedown to finish off the 14-3 win.

Sindoni will face third-seeded Lexy Pabon on Maryland in the finals Sunday. Pabon is 5-0 with five falls this weekend.

JUNIOR DIVISION

Ousmane Duncanson, the third seed at 152 pounds, rallied to top Christian Griggs of Alabama, 7-5 in quarterfinals to assure himself of All-America status.

Duncanson scored the initial takedown, but Griggs recorded an escape late in the first period, and early in the second period, then registered a takedown for a 4-2 lead.

After Duncanson closed the gap to 4-3 with an escape, Griggs was banged a point for a technical violation with 10 seconds left in the second period to send the bout to the final two minutes tied at 4-4.

In the third period, Duncanson registered a quick escape to take a 5-4 lead, then scored a takedown with 1:02 remaining to up his lead to 7-4.

Griggs escaped 30 seconds later, but Duncanson fended off his takedown attempts for the final 32 seconds to advance to the semifinals.

In the semifinals, second-seeded L.J. Araujo ended Duncanson’s run in the championship bracket with a 6-2 decision.

Araujo scored a takedown in the first period to take a 2-0 lead, but Duncanson evened the score early in the second period with a tilt for two near-fall points.

Araujo scored a reversal six seconds later, and rode out the final 1:34 to take a 4-2 advantage into the final two minutes. Araujo sealed the decision with a takedown with 38 seconds left in the third period.

In the consolation semifinals, Duncanson trailed 6-4 when we was pinned at 5:57 by Dane Steel of Wyoming in sudden-victory.

Duncanson scored a takedown in the first period, and an escape in the second period to take a 3-0 lead into the final two minutes.

Steel managed an escape with 33 seconds left in the third period, then registered a takedown to tie the match with 12 seconds remaining.

After a scoreless minute on their feet, Duncanson registered an escape in the first 30-second overtime period. Steel countered with an escape in the second 30-second overtime period, then took Duncanson to his back for the fall in the closing seconds.

Duncanson will square off with Jake Zearfoss of New Jersey in the fifth-place match Sunday.

Caden Bellis and Silvestri both struggled to get out from the bottom and lost hard-fought decisions in the quarterfinals. Bellis dropped a 2-0 decision to Brayden Robison of Utah, and Silvestri fell, 5-4, to Jordan Joslyn of Chautauqua Lake in a rematch of the 126-pound N.Y. state finals, which Joslyn won 6-4.

Bellis, the second seed at 138 pounds, gave up a reversal to Robinson with 1:33 left in the second period, and the Utah native rode out the final 93 seconds.

Bellis started the third period on the bottom, and Robinson once again rode him out to preserve the win.

In the blood round match, Bellis scored a third-period escape for a 1-0 win over Ryder Yoshitake of California to guarantee himself of All-American status for the second year in a row.

After a scoreless first period, Bellis, who finished third at 132 pounds last year, rode Yoshitake for the entire second period. Bellis registered his escape with 1:17 remaining in the third period, and kept Yoshitake at bay for the remainder of the bout.

In the consolation ruond-of-4, Bellis pulled out a 3-0 decision over fellow New Yorker Amir Avazov of James Madison High School.

After a scoreless first period, Bellis rode top for the entire second period. Bellis escaped about 30 seconds into the third period, then scored a takedown with 37 seconds remaining to take a 3-0 lead. He rode out the remainder of the period to secure the win.

In the consolation semifinals, Bellis held on for a 4-3 win over Colton Theobald of Utah to reach the third-place match for the second year in a row.

After a scoreless first period, Bellis rode top in the second, and turned Theobald for three near-fall points with 12 seconds remaining. Theobald escaped with 2 seconds remaining to close the gap to 3-1.

Bellis stretched his lead to 4-1 with an escape midway through the first period. Theobald scored a takedown in the closing seconds, but couldn’t get Bellis to his back.

Bellis will square off with PIAA sixth-place finisher Gunnar Myers of Wallenpaupack Sunday for third place.

Silvestri, the fifth seed at 126 pounds, also assured himself of All-American status for the second year in a row, with a 3-1 win over three-time PIAA place-finisher Chris Vargo of Bentworth, who was a state runner-up this year.

After a scoreless first period, Silvestri escaped with 5 seconds remaining in the second period to take a 1-0 lead.

Silvestri rode top for the entire third period, but was penalized a point in the closing seconds to tie the score and send the match into sudden victory. He scored the takedown with 25 seconds into the extra period for the win.

In the consolation round-of-4, Tennessee’s Jarvis Little scored a takedown midway through the third period to pull out a 3-1 win over Silvestri, knocking him into the seventh-place match.

Silvestri will face Daniel Aranda of Florida in the seventh-place match.

After going 1-1 on Friday, junior Tyler Roe, at 138 pounds, opened Saturday’s consolation bracket action with 7-0 decision of  Sam Morill of Utah.

After a scoreless first period, Roe hit a five-point move midway through the second period, then added a takedown in the third period to finish off the scoring.

In the first round-of-32, Roe scored an 8-4 win over Conlan Enk of Louisiana. Roe scored an escape and, then a takedown in the second period to extend his lead to 5-0, but Enk notched a reversal to close the gap to 5-2.

Roe scored another escape and takedown midway through the third period to take an 8-2 lead, then gave up a reversal in the closing moments for the final margin.

Roe’s tournament came to an end in the second round-of-32 with a 5-1 loss to Brady Calderwood of Virginia. Roe scored an escape midway through the third period to close the gap to 3-1, but Calderwood registered a takedown moments later to seal the victory.

Roe finished the tournament at 3-2.

FRESHMAN DIVISION
Jayden Duncanson, the second seed at 126 pounds, won his first three matches Friday, before dropping a 4-1 decision to fellow New Yorker Brendon Katimbang of Chaminade High School.

In the consolation bracket’s second round-of-16 Saturday, Duncanson scored a reversal and turned it into a pinning combination, for a fall of William Sakoutis of New Jersey in 1:53.

In the first consolation bracket round-of-8, Duncanson scored a five-point move late in the second period open up an 8-0 lead on the way to a 12-0 major decision over PIAA qualifier Gavyn Kelton of Notre Dame-Green Pond.

Duncanson assured himself of All-American status with a third-period pin of Christian Jelle of Minnesota. He scored an escape early in the third period to take a 3-2 lead, then took Jelle to his back for the fall.

In the consolation round-of-4, Duncanson dropped a 3-0 decision to Nick Walker of Delaware.

Walker took the early lead with a takedown midway through the first period. After riding Duncanson for the entire second period, he padded his lead with an escape midway through the third period.

Duncanson will face Benjamin Kohler of Utah in the seventh-place match Sunday.

At 113 pounds, Logan Bellis scored a five-point move late in the first period, and a takedown midway through the second period to build a 7-0 lead on the way to a 10-2 major decision over fellow New Yorker Kenneth Keltto of Carmel Hamlet.

In the consolation bracket round-of-32, Bellis gave up a penalty point in the second period, and a third-period escape in a 2-0 loss to Billy Weisberger of Washington.

He finished the tournament at 2-2.

At 106 pounds, Connor Streeter was eliminated via a 15-0 technical fall at the hands of Brody Heusel of Oklahoma. He finished the tournament 1-2.
