WAVERLY — Senior Michaela Lauper turned in a strong performance in the pitcher’s circle,and Waverly’s offense banged out 16 hits behind her in an 11-2 win over Sayre here Saturday afternoon in the nightcap of the “Battle at the Border” softball tournament.

Lauper allowed two runs on 11 hits, while striking out three and walking two in seven innings to earn the win.

Junior Olivia Robinson was 3-for-3 with a double, one run scored, and two RBI, while freshman Maddie Cron stroked three singles, and scored two runs, and sophomore Megan Apgar doubled and singled, scored one run scored, and had three RBI to pace Waverly at the plate.

Lauper singled twice, scored three runs, and drove in one run in the win, while sophomore Brinn Cooney singled twice, scored one run, and knocked in one run, 8th-grader Hannah Carpenter added two singles, Lecksie Douglas singled, scored one run, and drove in one run, and freshman Loralye Anthony singled, scored two runs, and had one RBI.

The Lady Wolverines took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with an unearned run, but the Lady Redskins answered with two runs in the top of the third on junior Olivia Corbin’s RBI double that also resulted in another run thanks to an outfield error.

Waverly regained the lead in the home half of the third inning on consecutive RBI singles by Cooney, Lauper, and Robinson that made it 4-2.

In the bottom of the fourth, Robinson ripped an RBI double to left field, and Apgar followed with an groundball RBI single to extend the lead to 6-2.

Apgar provided two more insurance runs in the sixth inning with a two-run double, and Douglas and Anthony added run-scoring singles during a five-run rally that pushed Waverly’s advantage to 11-2.

Parrish was tagged with the loss for the Lady Redskins, but matched her career-high with nine strikeouts.

Corbin doubled and singled, and drove in one run, while Flynn singled twice and scored one run, and sophomore Abbie McGaughey added a pair of singles to pace Sayre’s 11-hit attack.

Mikayah Brown singled and scored a run for the Lady Redskins, while freshman Rylee Lantz, junior Mercedez Haggerty, senior Makenna Garrison, and Lindsey Northrup each added a single.

Waverly improves to 2-3 on the season, and will travel to Thomas A. Edison Monday, while Sayre falls to 1-8 and hosts Cowanesque Valley Tuesday.
