IAC SOFTBALL: WAVERLY BANGS OUT 16-10 WIN OVER NEWARK VALLEY (2023-04-18)

NEWARK VALLEY — Waverly built an eight-run lead, fended off a Newark Valley comeback bid, and pulled away again for a 16-10 win here Wednesday afternoon in IAC South Large School softball division action.

Waverly led 2-1 after the first inning, and 4-3 after the second, then stretched its lead to 11-3 after 4 1/2 innings.

Newark Valley closed the gap to 11-8 with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Waverly answered with five runs in the top of the sixth to push its lead back to eight runs, at 16-8.

The Lady Wolverines banged out 23 hits in the win, led by 8th-grader Hannah Carpenter, who had four hits and two runs scored, and sophomore Meghan Apgar, whip had four hits, including a double, and two runs scored.

Junior Olivia Robinson had three hits, including a pair of doubles, three runs scored, and three RBI in the win, while junior Lea VanAllen had three hits, including a double, two runs scored, and three RBI, freshman Maddie Cron had three hits, including a double, two runs scored, and one RBI, and freshman Loralye Anthony stroked three singles and scored two runs.

Freshman Delaney Wheeler singled twice for Waverly, while senior Michaela Lauper singled and scored two runs, and junior Faith Blauvelt scored one run, and drove in one run.

Robinson earned the win, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits, while striking out five and walking five.

Lauper closed out the game, allowing two earned runs on one hit, while striking out two.

Waverly, now 3-4, hosts Notre Dame Friday.
