IAC SOFTBALL: TIOGA ROLLS OVER NEWFIELD, 27-3 (2023-04-23)

TIOGA CENTER — Tioga erupted for 13 runs in the first inning, and pounded out 28 hits, including 11 extra-base hits, in a 27-3 four-inning rout of Newfield here Friday afternoon in IAC South Small School Division softball action.

After sophomore Erin Luther struck out the side in the top of the first inning, the Lady Tigers sent 16 batters to the plate in the home of the inning.

Senior Felicia Lantz keyed the onslaught with a pair of two-run doubles, and senior Mykenzie Thetga belted a two-run double and an RBI single, while Luther hit an RBI double, freshman RaeAnne Feeko, who led off the inning with a single, also had an RBI single, and it was capped by an RBI double by junior Emily Bidwell.

Newfield scored two runs in the top of the second without the benefit of a hit — two walks, a hit batsman, and two wild pitches, but the Lady Tigers answered with a two-run single by senior Kathleen Toomey, RBI doubles by junior Megan Vance, and sophomore McKenzie Williams, and RBI singles by Thetga, and Bidwell, to up their lead to 19-2.

Newfield scored a run in the top of the third, but Thetga slammed a solo home run over the center field fence to lead off the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Feeko cleared the bases with a three-RBI double. Vance and Luther followed with back-to-back RBI singles to make it 25-3.

After Luther struck out the side in the top of the fourth, Bidwell stroked and RBI single, and Shumway added an RBI double in the bottom of the inning to provide the final margin.

Luther struck out the final batter of the top of the fifth inning with the bases loaded to end the game via the 12-run "mercy" rule.

Thetga had four hits, including a home run and a double, two runs scored, and five RBI, while Feeko had four hits, including a double, four runs scored, and three RBI, and Williams had four hits, including a pair of doubles, four runs scored, and one RBI to pace Tioga’s offensive barrage.

Lantz had three hits, including a pair of double, three runs scored, and five RBI in the win, while Bidwell had three hits, including a double, four runs scored, and three RBI, Shumway had three hits, including a double, three runs scored, and three RBI, and Luther had three hits, including a double, two runs scored, and two RBI.

Vance doubled and singled, scored three runs, and drove in two runs for the Lady Tigers, while Toomey singled and knocked in two runs, and junior Elizabeth Shaffer singled, and scored two runs.

Luther earned the win, allowing three runs on one hit, while striking out 11 and walking seven in five innings of work.

Tioga, now 4-1, hosts Watkins Glen Monday.
