Valley Sports ReportATHENS - The Athens softball team was forced to forfeit three of its wins due to a violation of PIAA rules pertaining to playing an ineligible player.
The Athens Area School District released the following statement on the violation:
"Athens Area softball just forfeit three of its wins due to a violation of the PIAA constitution for playing an ineligible player. This player, a lifelong Athens student, was not an in-person student, and was enrolled in a unique hybrid education model that allowed for the unfortunate mistake.
The Athens Area School District will always strive to stringently follow all PIAA rules. New protocols have been implemented to make sure that a situation like this does not happen again.
"Furthermore, Athens Area School District is very proud to eh all team members and the coaching staff as the error was in no way a reflection of their actions or character.
"Our district looks forward to a successful continuation of the season."
The Lady Wildcats will forfeit their wins over Wyalusing, Tioga, and Waverly. With their win last night, they are 2-8 on the season.
