IAC SOFTBALL: ROBINSON SPINS NO-HITTER; WAVERLY ROLLS NEWFIELD, 13-0, IN 5 INNINGS (2023-05-01)

WAVERLY — Junior Olivia Robinson fired a no-hitter, and senior Michaela Lauper led the Waverly offense in a 13-0 five-inning win over Newfield here Monday afternoon in IAC softball action.

Robinson fanned eight and walked one in five innings to earn the win She threw just 67 pitches, and the Lady Wolverines defense played flawlessly in the field.

Waverly jumped on top with two runs in the home half of the first inning. After a lead-off single by Lauper, sophomore Brinn Cooney worked a walk, and Robinson was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

With one out, 8th-grader Hannah Robinson and freshman Madison Cron drew consecutive bases-loaded walks to force home runs.

In the bottom of the second, Lauper reached third base on a throwing error with one out, and Cooney followed with a bunt to make it 3-0.

With Cooney on third base after an error on her bunt, Robinson helped her own cause with an RBI double to left field to extend the lead to 4-0.

Sophomore Megan Apgar capped the rally with an RBI single to make it 5-0

Waverly tacked on a run in the third inning on an RBI double by Lauper to push the lead to 6-0.

After retiring the first nine batters she faced, Robinson walked the lead-off batter in the fourth, but retired the next three batters.

Carpenter belted a two-run double with one out in the bottom of the fourth, After a walk to Cron, both runners moved up on a passed ball, and scored on a groundout off the bat of junior Lea VanAllen to make it 10-0.

Back-to-back singles by freshman Loralye Anthony and sophomore Alayna Miller re-ignited the rally, and Lauper made it 11-0 with an RBI single.

After Robinson struck out the side in the top of the fifth, Waverly ended the game via the 12-run “mercy” rule in the bottom of the inning on a two-RBI single by senior Alyvia Daddona.

Lauper had three hits, including a double, two runs scored, and two RBI to pace Waverly’s 10-hit attack, while Apgar singled twice, scored two runs, and drove in one run, and Carpenter doubled, scored one run, and drove in one run.

Robinson doubled, scored two runs, and had one RBI in the win, while Anthony singled and scored two runs, Daddona singled and had two RBI, and Miller added a single.

Cooney scored two runs, and drove in one run for the Lady Wolverines, while Cron scored two runs, and VanAllen added two RBI.

Waverly, now 6-6, returns to action Friday when it hosts Tioga.
