IAC SOFTBALL: WAVERLY RIDES ROBINSON'S 3-HITTER, LAUPER'S 5 BASE HITS TO 12-0 WIN OVER WATKINS GLEN (24 PHOTOS) (2023-05-08)

Valley Sports Report
WATKINS GLEN — Junior Olivia Robinson fired a 3-hitter, and senior Michaela Lauper had five hits to lead Waverly to a 12-0 win over Watkins Glen here Monday afternoon in IAC South Large School Division softball action.

Robinson fanned 10 and walked none to earn the win. She faced just three batters over the minimum as the Lady Wolverines played flawless defense behind her.

Waverly took a quick lead with one run in the top of the first inning. Lauper led off the game with a single to right field, moved to second on a one-out walk to Robinson, and scored on an RBI double by 8th-grader Hannah Carpenter.

Waverly added two runs in the third inning — both with two outs. With one out, Lauper beat out an infield single, and one out later, with Lauper on third base after a passed ball and a stolen base, Robinson hit a groundball single to make it 2-0.

After Carpenter was hit by a pitch, freshman Madison Cron capped the rally with an RBI single to make it 3-0.

The Lady Wolverines put the game away with a five-spot in the fourth inning.

Sophomore Faith Blauvelt led off the inning with a single to right field. With one out, Blauvelt moved to third base on a single by Lauper, and scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of sophomore Brynn Cooney to make it 4-0.

With two outs, Robinson ripped an RBI single into centerfield, and Carpenter followed with a double to put runners on second and third.

After a walk to Cron to load the bases, three wild pitches cleared the bases to make it 8-0.

Waverly added three runs to its lead in the top of the fifth — all with two outs — on an RBI double by Lauper, an RBI triple by Cooney, and an RBI single by Robinson.

The Lady Wolverines tacked on a run in the top of the seventh to provide the final margin.

Lauper was 5-for-5 with a double, five runs scored, and one RBI to pace Waverly’s 15-hit attack, while Robinson stroked three singles, scored three runs, and had three RBI, and Carpenter rapped a pair of doubles, scored one run, and had two RBI.

Blauvelt singled twice, and scored two runs in the win, while Cooney tripled, scored one run, and had two RBI, Cron singled, scored one run, and drove in one run, and freshman Loralye Anthony added a single.

Waverly, now 8-8, travels to Lansing Tuesday, and Towanda Thursday.
