Valley Sports Report
THE VALLEY — Athens “hosts” Mifflinburg this afternoon in the semifinals of the District 4, Class 4A baseball playoffs, while the Waverly and Tioga softball teams play in their respective quarter-final rounds in the Section IV playoffs, and the Tioga and Waverly boys golf teams wrap up the 2023 season at the IAC Championships.

BASEBALL
District 4 Playoffs
Class 4A Semifinals
1-Athens (18-1) vs. 4-Mifflinburg (14-7), 4:30 p.m. @ Mansfield University:
The Athens Wildcats have been off since a doubleheader sweep of North Penn-Mansfield last Tuesday, while the Mifflinburg Wildcats edged Danville, 4-3, in eight innings Saturday in the Class 4A quarterfinals.

Athens beat Danville, 4-2 earlier this season. It was Mifflinburg’s third win of the season over the Ironmen as they recorded wins of 9-6 and 6-0 earlier in the season.

Five (two to second-seed Midd-West, and two to third-seed Montoursville) of Mifflinburg’s seven losses were by one run, another was by two runs (a 2-0 loss to Blake Morningstar and Wyalusing), and the only other loss was a 7-4 setback to Wyoming Valley West in the regular-season finale.

SOFTBALL
Section IV Playoffs
Class B Quarterfinals
8-Waverly (10-10) at 1-Chenango Valley (16-2), 4:30 p.m.:
The Lady Wolverines are coming off a walk-off, 3-2, win over Oneonta Friday in the Class B opening round, while the Lady Warriors have been off since suffering an 11-0 loss to Maine-Endwell in the STAC Championship game.

Class C Quarterfinals
5-Tioga (9-7) at 4-Greene (13-3), 4:30 p.m.:
The Lady Tigers, who have lost seven in a row after a 9-0 start, have been off since losses to Owego (9-7) and U-E (14-2) May 13 at the Testa Tournament, while the Lady Trojans topped Elmira, 7-3, last Tuesday.

TRACK & FIELD
Section IV, Class D Championships, 2 p.m. @ Marathon:
Freshman pole vaulter Gavin Albrecht, who cleared a personal-best 12-feet, 6-inches last week at the IAC Championships, leads a young Tioga team into the Class D Championships.

BOYS GOLF
Tioga, Waverly at IAC Championships, 9 a.m.:
The Tigers are fresh off a runner-up finish to Candor Monday at the Section IV, Class D Championships, while the Wolverines were sixth at the Class C Championships.

GIRLS GOLF

Waverly at Willowcreek Golf Course, 4 p.m.:
The Lady Wolverines play one final tune-up before Thursday’s Section IV Championships.
