BALTIMORE — Waverly grad Wendi Hammond, a senior on the Division I University of Albany softball team, pitched 17 1/3 scoreless innings to lead the Lady Danes into the championship game of the American East Conference championship game.

In five appearances, Hammond fanned 15, walked one, and allowed 13 hits in 17 1/3 innings. She also had one win, and one save.

Hammond threw three scoreless innings in the opening round, a 7-3 win over sixth-seeded Maine. Hammond allowed five hits, and struck out four. She was pulled with the third-seeded Danes ahead 5-0.

In the second round, Hammond tossed a two-hit shutout in a 6-0 win over second-seeded Binghamton. Hammond fanned six and walked none in seven innings. One of the two hits was a single by Horseheads grad Alli Richmond.

In the winner’s bracket championship game, Hammond threw two innings of scoreless relief in a 1-0 loss to top-seeded University of Baltimore-Maryland County. Hammond allowed three hits, struck out three, and walked none.

In the consolation bracket finals, Hammond earned a save with two scoreless innings in a 5-3 win over Maine. Hammond allowed two hits, while striking out one and walking one.

In the championship game, Hammond tossed 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief in a 9-3 loss to UMBC. She allowed one hit, while striking out one and walking none.

Albany wraps up its season at 24-20.
