YOUTH BASEBALL (14U): VALLEY BOBCATS WIN DUNN CLASSIC (9 PHOTOS) (2023-06-01)
Valley Sports ReportCORNING — The Valley Bobcats 14U travel baseball team went 4-0 over the weekend to win the Dunn Classic here at the Corning-Painted Post Little League.
The Bobcats, featuring players primarily from Athens, Sayre, Waverly, notched wins over TC (Tompkins County) Arsenal, and the Horseheads-based Finger Lakes Falcons in pool play, then beat both teams again in bracket play to secure the title.
Valley Bobcats 14, TC Arsenal 4The Bobcats took control early with six runs in the top of the first inning on its way to a 14-4 win over TC Arsenal Saturday in the opening game of pool play.
Brady Flynn rapped three doubles, scored one run, and had four RBI to pace the Bobcats at the plate, while Joel Decker doubled and scored one run, and Brenden Cooke and Connor Davidson each singled, scored two runs, and drove in one run.
Eli Hobday scored three runs in the win, while Maison Apgar scored one run, and had two RBI, Jordan Brown scored one run, and knocked in one run, Zach Fisher, Chase Wheeler, and Duncan Thetga each scored one run, and Dylan Newman had one RBI.
Decker started on the mound, striking out two and walking two in a scoreless inning of work.
Flynn earned the win, allowing three runs — one earned — on four hits, while striking out three and walking one in five innings of relief.
Valley Bobcats 11, Finger Lakes Falcons 1The Finger Lakes Falcons struck first, but the Bobcats rallied for an 11-1 win behind a strong pitching performance from Maison Apgar Saturday afternoon.
Apgar allowed one run on five hits, while striking out five and walking two in five innings of work. Jordan Brown allowed one hit in a scoreless inning of relief.
Eli Hobday singled twice and had two RBI to pace the Bobcats’ seven-hit attack, while Zach Fisher singled, scored three runs, and knocked in one run, Kam Wheeler singled, scored one run, and drove in one run, and Brenden Cooke singled and scored two runs.
Dylan Newman and Apgar each singled and scored one run in the win, while Joel Decker had two RBI, Chase Wheeler, Brady Flynn, and Connor Davidson scored one run, and Jordan Brown drove in one run.
Semifinals
Valley Bobcats 15, TC Arsenal 8The Valley Bobcats overcame an early two-run deficit, and rolled to a 15-8 win over TC Arsenal Sunday in the semifinals.
Arsenal scored four runs in the top of the second inning to take a 5-3 lead, but the Bobcats answered with five runs in the third inning, and seven more in the fourth to take a 15-5 lead.
Brady Flynn doubled and singled, scored two runs, and had four RBI, and Brendan Cook doubled and singled, scored three runs, and had two RBI to pace the Bobcats’ 12-hit attack, while Zach Fisher singled twice, scored one run, and drove in two runs, and Connor Davidson singled twice, scored two runs, and knocked in one run.
Duncan Thetga singled and had three RBI in the win, while Kam Wheeler and Dylan Newman each singled, and scored one run, and Chase Wheeler, Eli Hobday and Joel Decker each crossed the plate once.
Thetga earned the win on the mound, allowing five runs — three earned — on four hits, while striking out six and walking four in four innings of work.
Eli Hobday closed out the game, allowing two hits in 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. He struck out two and walked one.
Championship
Valley Bobcats 4, Finger Lakes Falcons 3Eli Hobday scooted home on a passed ball in the bottom of the sixth inning, then stranded the tying run on second base in the top of the seventh as the Valley Bobcats edged the Finger Lakes Falcons, 4-3, in the championship game.
Hobday stroked an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning to give the Bobcats an early 1-0 lead.
After the Falcons tied the run in the top of the third inning on a pair of two-out hits, Brenden Cooke knocked in a run with a groundout in the home half of the inning to give the Bobcats a 2-1 lead.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, Zach Fisher walked, stole second, and scored on a single by Maison Apgar to make it 3-1.
The Falcons answered with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game at 3-3.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Hobday stroked a one-out single, and circled the bases on three passed balls to give the Bobcats a 4-3 lead.
Hobday retired the first two batters in the top of the seventh inning, then gave up a double. After the runner stole third, Cooke settled under a flyball to center field for the game’s final out.
Hobday singled twice, scored one run, and drove in one run to pace the Bobcats’ six-hit attack, while Cooke singled, scored one run, and had one RBI, Apgar singled and knocked in one run, Connor Davidson and Brady Flynn each had one hit, and Fisher and Dylan Newman each scored one run.
