VALLEY SPORTS REPORT: ATHENS' COOPER HEADLINES SUPER 7 AS 'GOLFER OF YEAR;' WAVERLY'S McCARTY TOP NEWCOMER (2023-06-16)

THE VALLEY - Athens junior Evan Cooper had an incredibly consistent season, culminating with his first trip to the PIAA Golf Championships. He is the 2023 Valley Sports Report "Golfer of the Year."

Cooper led the NTL with a 75.6 scoring average. He shot a career-best round of 74 at Towanda Country Club on the day Athens clinched its second straight NTL title. His high round of the season was an 83.

Cooper finished second at the District 4 Championships. He shot an 82 on Day 1, and followed it up with a 78 on Day 2.

Cooper finished tied for 57th at Class AAA state championships. He shot a two-total of 161, with rounds of 80 and 81.

A first-year senior, Landon McCarty worked his way from a part-time starter into Waverly’s top three. He is the 2023 VSR Golf "Newcomer of the Year."

McCarty had a plus-12 nine-hole scoring average. He shot a career-best 44 at Catatonk Golf Course in the regular-season finale.

McCarty was third on the Wolverines, and 18th overall, at the IAC Championships with a round of 108.

Evan Cooper, junior, Athens: See above.

Evan Sickler, junior, Tioga: Sickler posted a scoring average of 41.5 over nine holes, and shot season-low rounds of 38 at the Tioga Country Club in the opening match of the season, and at Mark Twain in the penultimate match of 2023.

He finished seventh at the IAC Championships with an 86, and was fifth at the Class D Championships with a round of 82

Sickler shot a 92 at Day 1 of the Section IV State Qualifier, missing the cut for Day 2 by four strokes.

Tyler Roe, junior, Tioga: Roe posted a scoring average of 42.8 over nine holes, and shot a season-low 40 at Shepard Hills.

Roe was 12th at the IACs with a round of 93, and finished second at the Section IV, Class D Championships with a round of 79.

Dylan Saxon, sophomore, Athens: Last year’s "Newcomer of the Year," Saxon had a scoring average of 88.3, which was seventh in the NTL. He shot a season-low round of 78 at the Selinsgrove Invite.

Saxon placed seventh at District 4 Championships with a two-day total of 181 (87-94).

Breanne Robinson, sophomore, Waverly: Robinson had a nine-hole scoring average of 47 on the season. She shot a season-low 41 at the Hillendale Golf Course in Ithaca on April 19.

Robinson finished second at the IAC Championships with a round of 95 at Hillendale, and placed sixth at the Section IV Championships, with another round of 95 at Soaring Eagles, to punch her ticket to States.

She finished 78th (out of 110 competitors) at the New York State Championships, carding rounds of 103 and 97 for a two-day total of 200.

Cameron Sullivan, senior, Athens: Sullivan had a scoring average of 93.6, which was good for 11th in the NTL.

Sullivan shot a season-low round of 86 at the Towanda Country Club. He missed the postseason due to an illness.

Ben Davis, junior, Tioga: Davis posted a nine-hole scoring average of 47.5, and shot season-low rounds of 42 at Shepard Hills and Tioga Country Club.

He shot a 108 at IACs — but bounced back with an 83 for a seventh-place finish at Section IV Class D Championships.
