NTL GIRLS SOCCER: ATHENS FALLS TO LIVERPOOL, 4-0 (24 PHOTOS) (2023-09-23)
Valley Sports ReportONEONTA - Liverpool used a fortunate bounce to take a 1-0 lead into the halftime intermission, but opened the game up in the second with three goals in a 4-0 win over short-handed Athens in non-league girls soccer action here at the Oneonta Soccer Complex.
"The girls played hard and battled the whole match," said Athens coach Rich Pitts. "We were down fur starters because of injury, so we were able to get some younger players time at a high level.
"They didn’t disappoint in stepping up," added Pitts.
Ellie Scivetti put the Warriors on the board five minutes into the contest on a shot from 20 yards out that deflected off an Athens defender and past Wildcat keeper Caremlita Pomaquiza.
Liverpool maintained the 1-0 advantage for the next 55 minutes until Grace Muller found the back of the net from the top-of-the-18 to make it 2-0.
Alexa Marsh scored the Warriors’ final two goals — one on a penalty kick, and the other on a corner kick — to provide the final margin.
Liverpool had an 18-1 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.
Pomaquiza recorded 13 saves in net for the Lady Wildcats.
"We have a few days to rest up for a big week ahead," said Pitts.
Athens, now 4-4, hosts NEB Tuesday and Troy Thursday, before hitting the road to Bloomsburg Saturday.
