GIRLS SWIMMING: WAVERLY BREAKS THREE MORE SCHOOL RECORDS AT WATKINS GLEN INVITE (2023-09-24)
Valley Sports ReportWATKINS GLEN — It was a record-breaking weekend for the Waverly girls swim team.
Sophomore Mira Kittle established a new school record in the backstroke, and was part of two new relay records, and sophomore Olivia Cheresnowsky made a very successful debut for Waverly at the Watkins Glen Swimming & Diving Invitational here Friday and Saturday.
Kittle broke her own school record in winning the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 59.71 seconds. She also finished second in the 50-yard freestyle.
Kittle and Cheresnowsky, a transfer from Athens, teamed with 7th-grader Megan Atanasoff, and 8th-grader Lauryn Welles to finish second in the 200-yard freestyle relay in a school-record time of 1:41.97, which narrowly missed the state standard time.
Kittle, Cheresnowsky, and Welles teamed with 7th-grader Natalie Steck to place sixth in the 200-yard medley relay in a school-record time of 1:56.95.
Welles finished sixth in the 50-yard freestyle in a personal-best time of 26.19 seconds, and 14th in the 100-yard breaststroke, while Atanasoff was 16th in the 50 free.
Cheresnowsky teamed with Atanasoff, junior Lizzy Robinson, and 7th-grader Audrey Kellogg to finish eighth in the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 4:06.85.
Steck finished 19th in the 100-yard breaststroke in a personal-best time of 1:26.16, while Robinson was 21st in the 500-yard freestyle in a personal-best time of 6:18.65, and 23rd in the 200-yard freestyle, and Brynna Twedt was 22nd in the 200-yard IM.
Several Waverly swimmers also posted PRs over the weekend.
Junior Brinn Cooney (1:38.55 in the 100-yard breaststroke), Cheresnowsky (56.43 seconds in 100 free — lead leg of 400 relay), Steck (29.99 seconds in the 50 free), Vada Harmon (2:37.99 in the 200 free, and 7:12.7 in the 500 free), Kellogg (2:23.14 in the 200 free), Bella Root (1:12.63 in the 100 free), Sydney Rosenbloom (1:16.33 in the 100 free), Twedt (1:24.03 in 100 backstroke), 7th-grader Ayla Wheeler (1:05.49 in the 100 free), and Sophie Williams (2:33 42 in the 200 free, and 6:52.12 in the 500 free) all swam personal-best times.
Waverly returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Susquehanna Valley.
