NTL BOYS SOCCER: MILLER, QUIROS POWER ATHENS IN 10-2 ROMP OVER NP-LIBERTY (24 PHOTOS) (2023-09-25)
Valley Sports ReportATHENS - Senior Korey Miller scored two goals and dished out three assists, and junior Marco Quiros tallied two goals to lead Athens to a 10-2 win over North Penn-Liberty in NTL boys soccer action here on a rainy Monday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
Quiros controlled a rebound of a shot by Miller, who was credited with an assist, and punched it past the keeper about 3 1/2 minutes into the game to give the Wildcats a quick 1-0 lead.
About 4 minutes later, senior Dash Bishop, off a feed from Miller, found the back of the net to make it 2-0.
The Wildcats only needed 3 1/2 minutes to extend the lead to 3-0 on a goal by Quiros, who volleyed a direct kick from junior Josh Leonard under the crossbar.
With 17 minutes remaining in the half, Zach Wilcox put NP-L on the board to close the gap to 3-1, but three minutes later Miller, off a feed from sophomore Eli Vogell, pushed the lead back to three goals, at 4-1.
With 10 minutes remaining, senior Alex Campbell finished off the first-half scoring with a goal to make it 5-1. Junior Isaac Wilcox was credited with an assist.
Sean Clare (Quiros assist), Miller (Leonard assist), and Leonard (Miller assist) scored in the first nine minutes of the second half to push the lead to 8-1.
Just three minutes later, Vogell, off an assist from junior Peter Jones, found the back of the net to make it 9-1.
Jones put the finishing touches on Athens’ scoring with 12:41 remaining in the contest, extending the lead to 10-1. Junior Braden Quinn was credited with an assist.
Zach Wilcox lit up the scoreboard again for NP-L wth 2 minutes remaining to provide the final margin.
Athens had a 17-2 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Junior Liam Lezak had one save in net for Athens.
Athens, now 4-4 overall and 4-2 in NTL play, returns to action Wednesday at Williamson.
