STAC GIRLS SOCCER: WAVERLY HOLDS OFF CHENANGO FORKS, 3-2 (24 PHOTOS) (2023-10-04)
Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY - Waverly dominated for the vast majority of the game, built a 3-0 lead, then gave up a pair of late goals in a 3-2 win over Chenango Forks here Wednesday night in STAC Central Division girls soccer action at Memorial Stadium.
"We had some fun with this game once we had a slight cushion," said Waverly coach Tara Hogan. "We were able to get Claire (Clonch) out of goal for a bit, and Paige Robinson up top.
"We needed to be better about taking advantage of Forks pushing their defenders far up and utilize our speed," noted Hogan. "We had a lot more chances that we didn't quite capitalize on.
"Playing with a different formation helped us up top, but we weren't doing well with finding our open forwards," she added. "We had quite a few players, including Kaylin Twedt and Maddie Cron, get some solid chances.
Freshman Ryleigh Judson beat the Forks keeper to a through-ball from freshman Makenzie Olmsted, and was able to punch it past her to give the Lady Wolverines a 1-0 lead about 3 1/2 minutes into the contest.
With 11:38 remaining in the half, senior Lea VanAllen played a through-ball from Olmsted, outran a pair of Forks defenders deep into the box, and laced a shot over the sliding keeper’s head to make it 2-0.
With 10:36 remaining in the contest, junior Kiley Stillman, off an assist from VanAllen, upped the Waverly advantage to 3-0.
An own-goal put Forks on the board with 6:40 remaining, and Anna Ginalsski scored with 67 second remaining to close the gap to 3-2.
Waverly had an 11-5 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 10-1 edge in corner kicks.
Sophomore Claire Clonch had nine saves in net for the Lady Wolverines, and senior Olivia Robinson added two.
Waverly, now 6-5-1, return to action Friday at Chenango Valley.
