Valley Sports ReportATHENS - Neither team generated many scoring opportunities, but Williamsport was able to capitalize on one more of theirs in a 2-1 win over Athens here Saturday afternoon in non-league boys soccer action at Alumni Stadium.
"It was a tough game," said Athens coach Jake Lezak.
"We are getting healthy and hoping to find some form heading into the last few weeks," he added. "I’m pleased with the effort from the boys today."
Connor Poole scored both of the Millionaires’ goals in the win, netting first one just 2 1/2 minutes into the contest.
Poole’s second goal came early in the second half, giving Williamsport a 2-0 lead.
Athens got on the board with a goal by Isaac Wilcox with 9:12 remaining in the contest, but couldn’t muster any more offense.
Williamsport had a 6-4 edge in shots-on-goal, and a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Athens junior Liam Lezak had four goals for the Wildcats.
Athens, now 6-7, returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Wellsboro.
