Valley Sports ReportTHE VALLEY — The District 4 soccer playoffs begin today with both Athens teams at Milton High School to face Selinsgrove in Class 3A semi-final contests.

District 4 PlayoffsClass 3A Semifinals4-Athens (6-9-2) vs. 1-Selinsgrove (14-4), noon @ Milton H.S.: The Wildcats dropped a 1-0 decision to Northeast Bradford in its season finale Oct. 20, while the Seals blanked Southern Columbia, 9-0, on Oct. 18.
Selinsgrove is riding an eight-game win streak in which it has outscored its opponents 59-4. On the season, Selinsgrove has scored 99 goals. Selinsgrove allowed 22 goals, and posted seven shutouts.
Athens went 0-3-2 in its final five games, scoring four goals in those games. On the season, Athens has scored 35 goals, and has been shutout five times. Athens allowed 34 goals on the season, and posted two clean sheets.
The two teams played three common opponents during the season, with Selinsgrove posting a 3-0 record against those teams, while Athens was 0-4.
Selinsgrove beat Wellsboro 10-1, while Athens dropped a pair of decision to the Hornets (2-1 and 4-1) … Selinsgrove beat Midd-West 4-1, while Athens dropped a 4-0 decision. … Selinsgrove topped Williamsport 4-1, while Athens lost to the Millionaires, 2-1.
There’s also a lot of recent history between these two programs. Athens beat Selinsgrove to win the District 4 title in 2018, but lost to the Seals in the 2019 Class 3A title game. Last year, Selinsgrove won, 7-0, in the semifinals.

3-Athens (8-10) vs. 2-Selinsgrove (10-6-1), 2 p.m @ Milton H.S.: The Lady Wildcats finished the regular season with a 2-1 win over Northeast Bradford on Oct. 18, while the Lady Seals dropped a 4-1 decision to Milton on Oct. 17.
Athens lost 6 of its final 9 games, while Selinsgrove ended the season losing four of its last six.
The Lady Seals scored 76 goals on the season, but 41 came in three games — a 16-0 win over Mount Carmel, and a 12-1 win over Shamokin, and a 13-1 win over Jersey Shore. They were shutout twice.
Selinsgrove allowed 24 goals, and posted five clean sheets.
Athens scored 23 goals this season, and was shutout nine times, while allowing 26 goals, and posting four clean sheets.
