SECTION IV GIRLS SWIMMING: MORE RECORDS FALL AS WAVERLY TURNS IN STRONG SHOWING AT CLASS B PRELIMS (8 PHOTOS) (2023-11-01)

Valley Sports Report
ENDWELL - Waverly, led by sophomores Mira Kittle and Olivia Cheresnowsky, will be well-represented at Saturday’s Section IV, Class B Girls Swimming & Diving Championships here at Maine-Endwell High School.

On Wednesday here at the Class B preliminaries, Waverly advanced all three relays, and 11 swimmers making up 19 entries in individual events. (The top 16 finishers in each individual event, and the top eight relays in each relay advance.)

Kittle posted the fastest time in the 50-yard freestyle, and broke the M-E pool record with a time of 24.25 seconds, which bests the previous mark of 24.28 seconds set by Corning standout Angie McKane in 2021.

Cheresnowsky finished second in the 50 free, and 8th-grader Lauryn Welles was fourth.

Kittle also posted the fastest time in the 100-yard freestyle at 54.11 seconds, while 7th-grader Audrey Kellogg was eighth, 7th-grader Ayla Wheeler was ninth, and 7th-grader Brynna Twedt was 14th.

Cheresnowsky posted the fastest time in the 100-yard backstroke, clocking in at 1:03.81, while Twedt was 12th, and Wheeler was 14th. Sophomore Sydney Rosenbloom finished 17th and is the first alternate for Saturday.

Kittle, and Cheresnowsky teamed with Welles, and 7th-grader Natalie Steck, to post the top time in the 200-yard medley relay, clocking in at 1:55.54, which breaks their own school record of 1:56.95.

Waverly’s 200-yard freestyle relay of Kittle, Cheresnowsky, Welles, and Kellogg (substituting for an injured Megan Atanasoff, also a 7th-grader), which already qualified for States by hitting the state standard earlier this season, posted the fastest time at 1:42.82.

Waverly’s 400-yard freestyle relay of Wheeler, Twedt, sophomore Lizzy Robinson, and Kellogg placed fourth in a time of 4:27.86.

Welles placed sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke, and Steck finished 12th.

Robinson placed ninth, Kellogg was 10th, and Vada Harmon was 15th in the 200-yard freestyle.

Robinson also placed ninth in the 500-yard freestyle, while Sophie Williams was 15th, and Isabella Root was 16th. Emma Vanderhoof finished 18th, and is the second alternate in the event for Saturday.

Harmon finished 16th in the 100-yard butterfly.

The Class B Championships is set for Saturday at Maine-Endwell. Start time is 2:30 p.m.
