Valley Sports ReportTHE VALLEY — Sophomore
Sophia Haney led Tioga to a winning record, and its first-ever postseason win this fall. She is the 2023
Valley Sports Report Girls Soccer "
Player of the Year."
Tioga 7th-grader
Grace Howey is the All-Valley team’s "
Newcomer of the Year," while Tioga’s
Jim Walsh is the "
Coach of the Year," Waverly senior
Paige Robinson and Athens senior
Mya Thompson share "

Fast and athletic, with great foot skills and a high soccer IQ, Haney led Tioga with 20 goals, and also dished out seven assists.
Haney saved her best for last this season, scoring with 3:21 remaining in regulation, and then 87 seconds into overtime to lift Tioga to a come-from-behind 6-5 win over Unatego in the opening round of the Section IV, Class C girls soccer playoffs. The program’s first-ever postseason victory.
Three days later, she had a goal and an assist in Tioga’s 6-4 season-ending loss to top-seeded Trumansburg.
A tenacious competitor with skills galore, and a strong knowledge of the game, Howey scored 12 goals, and dished out four assists in her first varsity season.
Like Haney, Howey finished the season strong, scoring two goals in Tioga’s postseason win over Unatego, then scoring two goals and dishing out an assist in the season-ending loss to Trumansburg.
Robinson and Thompson were both shutdown defenders, both fast and physical, and the backbone of their team’s respective defenses.
Robinson had one goal and one assist on the season, while Thompson had one assist.
Clonch, a defender by nature, was forced into goal after an injury to the starting keeper, and excelled. She registered four wins, including two shutouts, and one tie. She was in net for the Wolverines 1-0 losses to state-ranked Owego, and Horseheads, and a 2-1 loss to state-ranked Chenango Valley.
Walsh guided Tioga to a 9-6 record — the second most wins in program history, as well as the first-ever postseason win.
