NTL BOYS BASKETBALL: WELLSBORO TOPS SAYRE, 55-42 (18 PHOTOS) (2023-12-08)
Valley Sports ReportSAYRE — Wellsboro used a strong second quarter to build a 10-point halftime lead on its way to a 55-42 win over Sayre here Friday night in NTL boys basketball action.
Sayre juniors Mikey Griffin and Zach Senese each drained 3-pointers in the first quarter, but the Hornets led 11-10 after the first eight minutes.
Caden Smith, who had a pair of 3-pointers, and Hayes Campbell scored seven points apiece to field an 18-9 Wellsboro run in the second quarter to up the advantage to 29-19.
Junior Hudson Trump’s old-fashioned three-point play helped Sayre to a 10-8 advantage in the third quarter that trimmed the deficit to 37-29 entering the final eight minutes.
Junior Nick Pellicano, who was held to just four points in the first three quarter, scored eight points in the fourth quarter, and Senese added his fourth 3-pointer of the game, but Wellsboro closed the game out with an 18-13 run.
Pellicano had 12 points, three rebounds, three assists, and one blocked shot, and Senese had 12 points and three assists to lead Sayre, while Griffin had 11 points, and eight boards
Trump chipped in with five points, five rebounds, and two steals in the win, and sophomore Karter Green had three rebounds and two steals.
Campbell led Wellborn with 18 points, while Smith scored 16, and Luke Rothermel added 10 points.
Sayre, now 2-2, returns to action Wednesday at Troy.
