NTL JV BOYS BASKETBALL: BIG THIRD QUARTER PROPELS ATHENS TO 39-12 WIN OVER SAYRE IN OPENING ROUND OF VALLEY CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT (24 PHOTOS) (2023-12-27)
Valley Sports Report ATHENS - Athens used a 22-2 third-quarter blitz to blow open a close game on its way to a 39-12 win over Sayre here Wednesday afternoon in the opening round of the junior varsity boys Valley Christmas Tournament.
Adam Kemp scored six points, and Lucas Schultz added four as the junior Wildcats took an 11-7 lead into the halftime intermission.
Eli Hobday tossed in eight points, Kemp scored six points, and James Friend added five points, including an old-fashioned three-point play, that fueled the decisive third-quarter run that put Athens up 33-9 heading into the final seven minutes.
Kemp led Athens with 12 points, while Hobday scored eight, Friend and Schultz added six points apiece, and Alex McQuay chipped in with four.
Carter Bleiler scored six points on a pair of 3-pointers to lead Sayre.
Athens will face Waverly in the championship game Thursday afternoon, while Sayre takes on Tioga.
